In the new BET+ original film “Kemba,’ a sheltered college student falls in love with a man, only to learn that he is not who she believes him to be. Instead of the loving man that she imagines, he is actually a drug kingpin. After being abused and manipulated, she finds herself at the center of the war on drugs. About 'Kemba'

Based on the true story of Kemba Smith, “Kemba” tells the story of a sheltered college student who falls in love with the wrong man before learning that he is not who he wants her to believe that he is. When Kemba finally discovers that her boyfriend Khalif is actually a drug kingpin, he becomes abusive, grooming the straight-laced Kemba to accept his dangerous and illegal activities.

Though she never dealt or handled drugs, Kemba becomes a pawn in the government’s case against Khalif and receives an incomprehensibly tough sentence for being tangentially connected to her boyfriend’s crimes. Never losing hope, her parents and an attorney with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund launch a campaign for appeal and later clemency. They harness the power of Black civic organizations, sororities, celebrities, and lawmakers to help free Kemba.

This touching film about strength and perseverance stars Nesta Cooper as Kemba along with Siddiq Saunderson, Sean Patrick Thomas, Michelle Hurd, and others.
