Featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski is set to defend his belt for the sixth time since winning the belt more than 1,500 days ago. His opponent, Ilia Topuria, is 14-0 including 12 stoppage wins, so whether it’s the champ’s more-than-four-year title reign or the challenger’s winning streak, something will have to give in the main event. About UFC 298: Volkanovski vs. Topuria
UFC 298’s main event will be undisputed vs. undefeated, as UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski takes on third-ranked challenger Ilia Topuria. Volkanovski (26-3) lost his last match in October 2023 after joining UFC 294 on just 10 days’ notice. He faced UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev and even though he knocked him out in the first round, he did so via an illegal head kick, giving Makhachev the victory. In Volkanovski’s last title defense at UFC 290 in July 2023, he beat interim featherweight champion Yair Rodríguez by TKO in the third round, unifying the belt after he had moved up to lightweight for his previous fight.
Also on the card, highly ranked middleweight contenders Robert Whittaker (No. 3) and Paulo Costa (No. 6) will square off in the Octagon in the co-main event. Whittaker (25-7) is a former UFC middleweight champion and is looking to win his way back into title contention. Costa (14-2) has 11 KO victories and is hoping that another will move up the middleweight ladder and closer to a title shot.
In the night’s lone heavyweight matchup, Junior Tafa will replace his brother Justin in the match against Marcos Rogerio de Lima after Justin sustained an injury the week of the fight. In dramatic fashion it was announced at weigh-ins on Friday that Junior would be stepping in on one day’s notice.
