For all of the showmanship and pageantry that accompanies life as a WWE superstar, a career in professional wrestling requires intense training that pushes athletes both physically and mentally. For the first time, the WWE is giving viewers a look at what the grueling process to the ring is actually like.

From 16-time world champion John Cena, “WWE: Next Gen” chronicles the lives of multiple perspective pro wrestlers vying to get a contract with the world’s largest and most prestigious sports entertainment company. In the past the WWE has aired a reality competition show — “WWE Tough Enough” — that focused on the training of new superstars, “WWE: Next Gen” allows fans to be a fly on the wall throughout the process.

The recruits go from tryouts in Los Angeles to training in Orlando at the WWE Performance Center. the athletes get coaching and insights from some of WWE’s most popular legends, as well as current superstars and backstage executives. Along the way, the young wrestlers will face challenges both in and out of the ring, but arguably the biggest difficulties in their way are of their own creation.
