Is ‘Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ Streaming Now? When Will it Become Available on Max?

Witness the awesome spectacle of ‘Furiosa’ in theaters this weekend, or follow this handy guide and find out when you could be streaming it at home.

If watching “Mad Max: Fury Road” in 2015 made you curious to know more about Imperator Furiosa, good news. The grim-faced road warrior is back in a new film that reveals her perilous origin story: “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” which arrives exclusively in theaters on Friday, May 24 — though of course, preview screenings began earlier this week.

Key Details:

  • “Furiosa” is already a favorite of critics and audiences according to Rotten Tomatoes.
  • The film is a Warner Bros. Discovery picture, so it will stream on Max eventually.
  • Viewers will almost certainly have to wait at least 80 days before the movie premieres on Max.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” follows a young Furiosa as she’s snatched away from the Green Place of Many Mothers by Dementus and his gang of post-apocalyptic bikers. As they travel through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel, a fortress ruled by the Immortan Joe. The two warlords engage in a bloody fight for dominance, and Furiosa must battle to survive, and find her way home again.

The movie is already a big hit with audiences who have caught preview screenings, as well as critics. “Furiosa” holds an 89% score from reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes, and 95% of audiences agree it’s a fantastic way to enjoy a long holiday weekend.

When is ‘Furiosa’ Going to Premiere on Max?

Warner Bros. Discovery is handling domestic distribution for “Furiosa,” which means the movie will stream on Max for certain once it’s done collecting ticket revenues and purchase/rental fees from premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms like Prime Video and Apple TV.

WBD’s most recent blockbuster hit “Dune: Part Two” took a bit of an unusual path to streaming. Warner Bros. Discovery is a big believer in maximizing theatrical and PVOD exclusivity periods, in order to make as much money off of movies as it can before shifting them to Max, which is usually the end of the road for them as revenue generators.

“Dune: Part Two” broke that pattern somewhat, landing on Max a mere 81 days after its initial wide release. In fact, in my opinion, signs could point to a new release strategy emerging for WBD; “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” was available to stream 67 days after its bow in theaters, and “The Color Purple” showed up on Max just 53 days after its release.

Ultimately, I think “Furiosa” will be a big enough box-office draw for WBD to use a similar window to “Dune” for the movie. If the company waits 81 days to put “Furiosa” on Max, it will debut on the streamer on Tuesday, Aug. 13, the perfect way for the streamer to bookend the summer movie season with it.
