Released just in time for last week’s St. Patrick’s Day, “Irish Wish” has become Netflix’s pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. The movie has accrued 1 million views in its first 72 hours of availability according to Samba TV, getting most of its views from older millennial households (age 35-44). This group over-indexed the average viewership of the movie by 6%.
The film performed even better for Netflix than Lohan’s “Falling For Christmas,” which hit the streamer in November 2022; that movie saw a still-impressive 989,000 views in its first 72 hours. The success of the two films demonstrates how streaming can revitalize a performer’s career; Lohan appeared in just two movies between 2015 and 2022 before starring in “Falling for Christmas,” but fans can still access her films from earlier in her career on streaming services like Disney+ and Paramount+. Likely thanks to the availability of Lohan’s early films on various streamers — and her appearances in gossip columns — audiences still appear to be excited for new projects from the former Disney star.
A quick glance at Netflix’s viewership data from 2023 gives some context to the success experienced by “Irish Wish.” The film is 93 minutes in length, which translates to 93 million minutes viewed if we assume the film was finished by all 1 million households who started it over the weekend. While that is likely not the case, it balances out by not accounting for any repeat viewings. The 93 million minutes beat out Season 5 of Netflix’s popular racing docuseries “Formula 1: Drive to Survive,” which was streamed for 90.2 million minutes in 2023. It’s also nearly as many minutes as the first season of “That '90s Show,” which consisted of 10 episodes and compiled just over 95 million minutes streamed last year.
