Max’s Top 5 Most Anticipated Titles Premiering in 2024: ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2, ‘Furiosa,’ ‘True Detective,’ More

It’s hard to narrow the list of titles we’re excited for on Max to just five, but the following list represents the best of the best.

Warner Bros. Discovery had a fairly impressive 2023 performance-wise. It started the year with a bang streaming-wise, with “The Last of Us” becoming another bona fide hit, and “Succession” premiering its final season on Max. Its Greta Gerwig-helmed comedy “Barbie” became the top box-office performer of the year, and is also now streaming on Max, where it is no doubt compiling impressive viewing statistics.

So what can fans expect from the WBD release slate this year? There are some truly tantalizing titles headed to Max in 2024, and readers can check out the five shows and movies The Streamable is most excited to watch on the service below!

True Detective’ Season 4 | Jan. 14, 2024

“True Detective” took the world by storm in its first season, which is still widely hailed as one of the best inaugural TV seasons ever made. But Seasons 2 and 3 of the series fell off a bit in quality according to fan and critical perception, and the show hasn’t released a new batch of episodes since 2019 while it tries to rediscover its formula from Season 1. Still, its formula of high production values and big-name stars keep the show must-see television.

This year, the show is channeling its inner “Fargo” as it takes viewers to the cold northern wastes of Alaska. Detective Liz Danvers (Jodi Foster) and Detective Evangeline Navarro (Kali Reis) begin investigating the disappearance of eight men from a research station, but their work will take them in directions even these two seasoned law officers would never have conceived.

Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Season 12 | Feb. 4, 2024

“As Curb comes to an end, I will now have the opportunity to finally shed this ‘Larry David’ persona and become the person God intended me to be — the thoughtful, kind, caring, considerate human being I was until I got derailed by portraying this malignant character. And so ‘Larry David,’ I bid you farewell. Your misanthropy will not be missed. And for those of you who would like to get in touch with me, you can reach me at Doctors Without Borders.”

Such was Larry David’s public statement in announcing that the upcoming season of “Curb” will be the show’s last farewell. This cinema vérité-style comedy follows a fictionalized version of the “Seinfeld” creator as he bumbles his way through life, usually in either complete ignorance or utter defiance of established social norms and customs. The show is the ultimate in cringe comedy, and fans won’t want to miss their chance to say a final farewell.

House of the Dragon’ Season 2 | Exact Date TBA, Summer 2024

This “Game of Thrones” prequel series is set around 200 years before the events of the main series. It follows the events of The Dance of Dragons, a devastating war between branches of the Targaryen household that signaled the beginning of the end for the dynasty.

“House of the Dragon” may have struggled a bit to find its footing early in its first season, but by the end it had become one of the most engaging series on television. The war between the Targaryen family had barely begun, and this season will show the true brutality of the civil war that led to the downfall of one of Westeros’s greatest houses.

‘The Franchise’ | Release Date TBD, Likely Fall 2024

The superhero movie genre may not be the top draw at box offices anymore, but there was a time in the mid-to-late 2010s when such movies were essentially guaranteed to cross the $1 billion mark in ticket sales. Now, franchise fatigue has seemingly set in for Marvel and DC movies alike.

Enter “The Franchise,” the new satire from the mind of Armando Iannucci about the production of a superhero movie behind the scenes. Iannucci is the creator of such works as “Veep,” “In the Loop” and “The Death of Stalin,” ensuring the show’s humor will be rooted in authenticity, sharp, and quite dry. It’s sure to be a look at the superhero movie production complex that audiences haven’t seen often.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga’ | Theatrical Release May 24, 2024, Anticipated Streaming Release Sept. 20

Mad Max: Fury Road” was a revelation to cinema-goers when it was released in 2015. The film was beloved by critics and fans alike, and George Miller is back for a new sequel — or rather, prequel, focusing on the life and origin of Imperator Furiosa that promises to bring all the absurdity, unexpected comedy, and high-octane action of “Fury Road” back to the screen.

“Furiosa” follows the titular character as she is snatched away from the Green Place of Many Mothers by a ruthless biker gang in the aftermath of nuclear devastation. Caught in a war between tyrants, Furiosa survives trial after trial and plots her way back to the only true home she’s ever known.
