Netflix Lands Its Biggest Game Yet With Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition

Get your old cheat code printouts ready — Netflix’s ever-growing collection of games is getting a trio of classics when “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition” arrives on December 14. Now, Netflix members can either relive their childhoods or experience these three classics for the first time ever all from their mobile devices.

  • “Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy — The Definitive Edition” will arrive on Netflix’s gaming portal on December 14.
  • Netflix users can download the game, which contains “Grand Theft Auto III,” “Vice City,” and “San Andreas” for free.
  • This is the latest and, at the moment, the most prominent, release to hit Netflix’s gaming platform.

Starting today, fans can pre-register and be among the first to play each of the three titles in the collection — “Grand Theft Auto III,” “Grand Theft Auto: Vice City,” and “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.” “The Trilogy” “GTA III” is where the series took off, starring a silent but deadly gangster named Claude who makes an enemy out of just about everyone in Liberty City. In “Vice City,” you take control of Tommy Vercetti, an ex-con and former member of a crime family who walks out of prison and right back into the thick of “the life.” In “San Andreas,” you play as CJ, a former member of the Grove Street Families gang who gets pulled back to gang life after his mother’s tragic murder.

For the uninitiated, these three titles were originally released on PlayStation 2 and helped catapult the “Grand Theft Auto” series into the cultural zeitgeist. The games revolutionized open-world gameplay, cinematic and immersive stories, and character design, all of which are still felt to this day. Since these three titles, the “Grand Theft Auto” series has received two outright sequels, two additional DLCs for “Grand Theft Auto IV,” and a metaverse-esque open-world online experience aptly titled “Grand Theft Auto Online.”

This news follows reports that Netflix is working on releasing game support for TVs and PCs, and even launched beta controller access to users in Canada and the UK. If Netflix can do what so many other gaming companies have failed to do — seamlessly stream video games to users — it would go a long way to improve subscription numbers and justify any upcoming fee increases.

Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition adds to a growing catalog of more than 80 mobile games, and an increasing number of those games are full-on retail gaming experiences. Alongside “Grand Theft Auto” are full-scale games like “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge,” “Samurai Shodown,” and “Farming Simulator 23,” along with various other traditional mobile experiences like puzzle games, endless runners, sports titles, and more.

Netflix

Netflix is a subscription video streaming service that includes on-demand access to 3,000+ movies, 2,000+ TV Shows, and Netflix Originals like Stranger Things, Squid Game, The Crown, Tiger King, and Bridgerton. They are constantly adding new shows and movies. Some of their Academy Award-winning exclusives include Roma, Marriage Story, Mank, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Netflix offers three plans — on 2 device in HD with their “Standard with Ads” ($6.99) plan, on 2 devices in HD with their “Standard” ($15.49) plan, and 4 devices in up to 4K on their “Premium” ($22.99) plan.

Netflix spends more money on content than any other streaming service meaning that you get more value for the monthly fee.
