Netflix Reportedly Signs Ali Wong for 2 Stand-Up Specials

Fern Siegel

Ali Wong made her name on two Netflix stand-up specials:”Baby Cobra” and “Hard Knock Wife.” And she’s just signed with the streamer for two more, the first debuts in 2020, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Wong currently stars in the ABC sitcom “American Housewife.”

The comedian has become a hot property since her first Netflix special, released on Mother’s Day in 2016, when she was seven months pregnant. New York magazine called “Baby Cobra” a “star-making moment.”

Given her popularity, THR notes HBO was also eager to secure a deal with Wong, as well as a scripted show at upcoming streaming HBO Max. The trade magazine cites sources who peg her upcoming Netflix specials in the multimillion-dollar category.

Robbie Praw, director of original stand-up comedy programming at Netflix, told THR: “She offers a completely distinct voice in the culture, and audiences all over the world have responded to her raw, unfiltered humor.”

Wong’s history with Netflix is deep. She voiced Bertie in the animated “Tuca and Bertie” and wrote the 2019 movie “Always Be My Maybe.”

On the thriller front, Netflix has begun production on “Clickbait,” starring Zoe Kazan, Adrian Grenier, Betty Gabriel and Phoenix Raei. The eight-episode series explores how social media can propel dangerous impulses and blur the line between real and virtual personalities.

“Clickbait” is created by Tony Ayres (“The Slap”) and Christian White. Ayres will executive produce with David Heyman (“Harry Potter”).

Netflix’s basic service is $9 a month.
