Quibi Adds Arturo Castro’s ‘Alternatino’ Hit to Lineup

Quibi ordered the comedy “Alternatino,” with Arturo Castro charting life as a U.S. Latin millennial. The Comedy Central show zinged American politics and culture.

Arturo Castro (“Broad City,” “Narcos”) received praise for his breakout series, which began in June 2019. Some of the notable episodes in the first season included “Welcome to America,” about a student in a class of recent immigrants trying to cope with tragedy, and “A Sick Child’s Dying Wish.”

The Washington Post called the show “impeccable satire.”

“I’m thrilled to launch ‘Alternatino’ in this exciting new platform, while being able to remain a part of the Comedy Central family. I’m also thrilled about the churro truck they offered as part of the deal,” said Castro, who created, wrote and executive produced the show.

“Alternatino” is part of the network’s long-term support for sketch comedy, especially those that comment on the cultural zeitgeist.

Comedy Central has been instrumental in launching various comics’ careers, including Amy Schumer, Nick Kroll, Dave Chappelle, Samantha Bee and Keegan-Michael Key.

Quibi is currently offering a 14-day free trial limited offer.

The mobile platform launched in April, but despite the expectations and A-list names attached, founder Jeffrey Katzenberg expected a bigger splash. The short-form platform was designed for people on the go. Instead, it launched during a national quarantine — and he blames the coronavirus for its travails.
