Quibi to Enter Dating Show Arena With ‘The Hot Drop’

Fern Siegel

Dating shows just went interactive. Mobile streamer Quibi is creating “The Hot Drop,” which offers a 21st-century approach to dating.

The eligible single doesn’t pick his or her date; the audience does. Aimed at millennials, the series features all genders and sexual preferences. Episodes will air three times a week.

In the first episode, “Hot Drop” profiles a desirable candidate, highlighting their careers, lifestyle, hobbies and past relationships. Then, via Quibi’s app, viewers submit their own videos, hoping for a match-up. The streamer will sift through the submissions, pick the three best candidates in the second episode, then ask the Quibi community to vote. By week’s end, the two take off for a high-end date, as the audience goes along for the ride.

The new series is produced by ITV America’s Sirens Media and ITV Studios Entertainment.

Executive producer-Siren Media president Jessica Sebastian calls the show an “edgy new entry in the space,” while Angela Jain, managing director, ITV Studios Entertainment, says the show is a “distinctive, contemporary and entertaining take on the dating scene.”

Besides “The Hot Drop,” Sirens is also producing Quibi’s upcoming Cara Delevingne-helmed practical joke series. Other credits include Bravo’s “The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Season 10.

ITV Studios created “Love Island,” in its sixth season in the UK.

The Jeffrey Katzenberg-founded mobile streamer debuts April 6.
