She’s beautiful and she’s here! As the calendar turns to December, a big month for Warner Bros. Discovery begins ahead of its big Christmas Day release: Blitz Bazawule’s reimagining of “The Color Purple,” based on the award-winning stage musical of the same name and starring Fantasia Barrino, Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, Colman Domingo, Corey Hawkins, H.E.R., Halle Bailey, Ciara, and more.

Ahead of the theatrical release, Max will usher in the month with not only the original 1985 film but also the upcoming documentary special “Oprah and The Color Purple Journey,” which will premiere on Max on Dec. 28 and take viewers through the making of the new movie musical adaptation and Winfrey’s history with the property.

The epic 11-time Oscar nominee kicks off Max’s December (and a month of “Color Purple” content for Warner Bros.) Spanning 40 years, the adaptation of Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize winner follows Celie, a Black woman living in the South in the early 1900s, and the abuse and bigotry she experiences, struggling to build her own identity and holding onto her dream that one day she’ll be reunited with her sister, Nettie. Whoopi Goldberg stars in her breakthrough role opposite Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey (in her feature film debut), Margaret Avery, Rae Dawn Chong, Willard Pugh, Adolph Caesar, Akosua Busia, and more.

Great Photo, Lovely Life” | Tuesday, Dec. 5

Amanda Mustard examines her family tree, for better or for worse, in the new HBO Original documentary. Through interviews, archival photographs, home movies, and more, the photojournalist investigates decades of serial sexual abuse committed by her grandfather, unraveling a world of secrets and working to disrupt the cycle of intergenerational trauma within her family and beyond.

“Leo Reich: Literally Who Cares?!” | Saturday, Dec. 16

Nominated as the Most Outstanding Show at the 2023 Melbourne International Comedy Festival and following an Off-Broadway run, Leo Reich’s “Literally Who Cares?!” comes to HBO in the comic’s first for the cabler. Reich takes the stage in the self-parodic set and, per the special’s description, “blends songs, anecdotes, and anxious non-sequiturs in a valiant attempt to raise awareness about important social and political causes… or something.”

“Spirited Away: Live On Stage” | Sunday, Dec. 24

Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar winner comes to life under lights in the Japanese-language stage adaptation of the Studio Ghibli classic. Featuring 32 performers and more than 50 puppets, the production follows the beloved story of 10-year-old Chihiro, who gets lost in a mysterious world as her parents are turned into pigs and she must survive in the strange land and return to the human world. Ghibli fans across the pond can also catch the production live starting in the spring when the production transfers to London stages on April 30.

“Oprah and The Color Purple Journey” | Thursday, Dec. 28

Oprah Winfrey will continue the month-long “Color Purple” celebration with a new behind-the-scenes Max Original documentary. The multihyphenate and star of the original 1985 film will walk viewers through the property’s history, including the novel’s ongoing importance, its screen and stage (and now screen again) adaptation, and her personal history with Walker’s work as viewers get an intimate look at the new reimagining, arriving in theaters on Christmas Day, Dec. 25.
