Who’s Ready for Trump TV? Truth Social Parent Company Prepares Rollout of Streaming Apps

If there’s one public figure who hasn’t gotten enough media attention since 2015, it’s former president Donald Trump. That’s why his social media company, which has seen a stock market freefall recently, is formalizing plans to start a streaming service. On Tuesday, Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG) announced a three-phase rollout of the future streaming platform. While there was no timetable announced for the implementation of these plans, the company reported that it has finished its research and development phase.

  • Phase 1: Introduce Truth Social’s CDN (content delivery network) for streaming live TV to the Truth Social app for Android, iOS, and Web.
  • Phase 2: Release stand-alone Truth Social over-the-top (“OTT”) streaming apps for phones, tablets, and other devices.
  • Phase 3: Release Truth Social streaming apps for home TV.

In 2021, Trump Media & Technology Group projected that it would have 40 million subscribers by 2026; for comparison Disney+ currently has 46.1 subscribers in the United States and Canada.

In that same presentation, the company estimated that a Trump streaming platform could deliver an average revenue per user (ARPU) per month close to Netflix’s nearly $12, “given Trump’s highly enthused base.” Again, Disney+ generates an ARPU of $6.84 monthly.

“We’re excited to move forward with the next big phase for Truth Social,” TMTG CEO Devin Nunes said. “With our streaming content, we aim to provide a permanent home for high-quality news and entertainment that face discrimination by other channels and content delivery services. There is a lot of great content that simply can’t find an audience for unjust reasons, and we want to let these creators know they’ll soon have a guaranteed platform where they won’t be canceled.”

Part of the reason for these “cancellations” is civil liability. When Fox News parroted Trump’s statements that Dominion Voting Systems helped rig the 2020 election, Dominion took the company to court. Despite what was being said on the air, Fox hosts, producers, fact-checkers, and senior executives said privately that claims of a stolen election were “kooky,” “dangerously reckless” and “mind-blowingly nuts.” Fox ultimately settled for $787 million.

Fox’s amplification of Trump’s claims has it entangled in a $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit from another voting machine company: Smartmatic. The outcome is likely to be similar to that of the Dominion case, given that Fox does not want its executives and hosts to have to testify in open court.

Streaming companies are not exempt from defamation lawsuits.

Trump supporters went on a buying spree when Trump Media stock went public earlier this year. Since hitting a high above $66 on March 27, the stock has taken a nosedive. It’s just over $25 at the time of this article’s publication. As the Washington Post reported, the company’s crumbling financial situation has not deterred MAGA die-hards from gobbling up the freefalling stock. Trump Media lost $58 million last year on $4 million in revenue, however, this has not stopped the company from paying out millions of dollars in executive salaries, bonuses, and stock.

On Monday, Trump Media & Technology Group filed to issue more than 21 million additional shares, essentially diluting the investments of existing shareholders.
