Netflix Debuts ‘Space Force’ Today, Steve Carell Comedy Parodies Real-Life Space Force

The offbeat workplace series “Space Force” debuts on Netflix today.

The comedy is from two “Office” alums: Steve Carell, who played Michael, and the series’ co-creator Greg Daniels. The plot revolves around staffers creating Space Force, another branch of the armed services.

The series is a comedic response to the sixth military branch President Donald Trump created in December. Space Force was established, in part, to protect strategic American space infrastructures and is in charge of space warfare.

Carell stars as Gen. Mark R. Naird, who wanted a leadership role in the U.S. Air Force, but is assigned a new branch of the U.S. military. Suddenly, he’s sent to a remote military base in Colorado to lead Space Force.

Carell, who doubles as a co-executive producer on the series, stars alongside John Malkovich, (“Burn After Reading,” “Bird Box”), Lisa Kudrow (“Friends”), Ben Schwartz, Jimmy O. Yang and Diana Silvers. Kudrow plays Carell’s wife Maggie, a dutiful Air Force wife who is now finding herself.

Daniels may take a comedic approach to “Space Force,” but some contend those designing the real-life military logo were influenced by “Star Trek.” “THIS IS THE STARFLEET LOGO!” The New York Times reporter Sopan Deb was quick to note on Twitter.

Daniels, the co-creator of “Parks and Recreation,” also has the show “Upload” on Amazon Prime Video.
