Walmart Considering Bringing ‘Shoppable’ TV Shows and Movies to Vudu Streaming Service Sometime This Year

Walmart, one of the biggest retail brands in the world, is reportedly planning to bring a minimum of six new original programs to its Vudu platform sometime within the next year. According to a report from Bloomberg, the channels will consist of “family-friendly” content that includes a reboot of the 1983 movie Mr. Mom, which is set for a debut in June of this year, as well as a science fiction show and crime drama that’s similar to CSI.

Vudu, unlike other streaming services like Hulu, Netflix, HBO, and Apple’s upcoming video streaming service, isn’t supposed to have a subscription, but Walmart hopes to drive revenue by making the programming “shoppable,” using new ad technology that could enable viewers to purchase products that are seen in TV shows or movies. The Bloomberg report doesn’t state whether the new content from Walmart will be available for free or not.

While the Vudu platform has a catalogue of 4K content already — and, currently, the service doesn’t require a subscription, but, instead, charges for rentals ranging from $2.99 to $4.99 — Walmart has a difficult challenge trying to compete with other original content options out there like Netflix, Hulu and others.
