Roku Channel Announces Deal for New ‘Good Morning Football’ Show That Will Be Free to Stream
The Roku Channel will welcome ‘Good Morning Football: Overtime’ to its airwaves starting Monday, July 29.
It may seem like the 2024-25 NFL season is still pretty far away, but looks can be deceiving. Regular season games don’t start until September, it’s true, but players begin reporting to training camps around the league later this week. That means there will soon be NFL news aplenty to discuss, and to help keep fans informed the league is creating a new, daily show called “Good Morning Football: Overtime,” which will air exclusively on The Roku Channel starting later this month.
Key Details:
- “Good Morning Football: Overtime” will bring its first episode to The Roku Channel starting July 29.
- The show will feature league news, player and coach interviews, and more.
- NFL Networks’ future is still somewhat murky as the league considers whether or not to buy a stake in ESPN.
The new show is an extension of the “Good Morning Football” series that will continue to air daily on NFL Network. “Good Morning Football: Overtime” will broadcast from 10 a.m. until 12 noon ET Monday through Friday on The Roku Channel, starting with its debut episode on Monday, July 29.
“GMFB: Overtime” will keep track of all the latest news from each team in the league, offering daily coverage of the most important stories. It will also provide interviews with players and coaches, as well as front-office figures and even celebrities who love the game, while offering informative and fun discussions on the topics that mean the most to NFL fans.
“It is an honor to be the launch partner for ‘GMFB: Overtime,’ the perfect addition to our Roku Sports offering,” Roku’s head of sports Joe Franzetta said. “This is an exciting milestone in our evolving partnership with the NFL. We look forward to working with both Sony Pictures Television and the NFL to bring millions of fans free access to the latest in the NFL five days a week.”
The show will presumably air on The Roku Channel’s NFL FAST (free ad-supported TV) channel, but that was not officially confirmed in the company’s press release announcing the introduction of “GMFB: Overtime.” It may be found in multiple locations around The Roku Channel, including its Sports content hub as well.
“With ‘GMFB: Overtime,’ we have an incredible opportunity to introduce this unique and beloved brand to an entirely new audience in all 30 NFL markets and beyond,” NFL Media SVP David Jurenka said. “We couldn’t be more excited for this expansion of the GMFB brand.”
What’s the Latest on NFL’s Investment Talks with ESPN?
The NFL Network’s long-term future is a bit difficult to determine these days. The channel let go some of its most-respected and recognizable personalities earlier this year, and also shifted operations of “Good Morning Football” from New York to Los Angeles.
In a vacuum, those moves could be seen as nothing more than housekeeping attempts to ensure the financial health of the channel. But in January, reports emerged that the NFL was considering a purchase of an equity stake in ESPN, and if it followed through on that move, the NFL Network and NFL RedZone channels would come under ESPN’s operational control.
Additional reporting on that possibility in May indicated that those with knowledge of the proceedings characterized a deal as “all but signed.” There have been no updates since, but such deals can take a long time to come together, and in the absence of reports that talks have fallen apart, there is still reason to believe that the NFL and ESPN are simply working on ironing out the final details of an agreement.
If the two sides do come to a deal, it could mean massive changes for all NFL Media projects, including “Good Morning Football.” Will the new “GMFB: Overtime” shift to ESPN+ if a new deal is made? What will happen to other NFL Network programming? All such questions have to wait until talks between ESPN and the league either move forward or cease, but until then, fans will find the new “GMFB: Overtime” show on The Roku Channel starting Monday, July 29.
