Netflix announced today that they have acquired StoryBots, the educational content company behind the kids’ series Ask the StoryBots. The show which debuted on Netflix in 2016, comes from the media company founded by a JibJab’s founders, Gregg and Evan Spiridellis.
Ask the StoryBots has been able to get big names to voice characters in their first two seasons with appearances from Whoopi Goldberg, Ed Norton, and Snoop Dogg. The show’s third season will premiere on Netflix this Fall.
The acquisition signals the company’s desire to expand deeper into kids’ educational content, especially with competition from WarnerMedia-owned HBO who streams Sesame Street and Apple TV+, which is launching a coding education series called Helpsters, in conjunction with Sesame Workshop.
The founders will stay on in the company’s animation unit, as Netflix expects to use the media company to launch additional series and shorts. The terms of the deal weren’t disclosed, as the cost of the deal immaterial to Netflix.
