Earlier this week, Apple made major announcements at their Worldwide Developer’s Conference (WWDC) to Apple TV and tvOS — including a brand new update to Apple TV devices called tvOS 14. The most noticeable enhancement is platform wide support for P.I.P. meaning that you can watch on-demand or live video.
While during the Keynote, the company demoed picture-in-picture across apps, we’ve have now confirmed that it supports the ability to stream two videos simultaneously in the same app. There is even built-in functionality that lets you natively switch between full-screen and picture-in-picture of the two streams.
How P.I.P Works in tvOS 14
Picture-in-picture within a single app is a much requested feature for cord-cutters, in particular sports fans.
Prior to its shutdown, PlayStation Vue has a similar feature called multi-view that allows you to watch four channels at the same time. While the feature was originally only available on PS4, they extended it to Apple TV devices.
Last August, fuboTV added a new feature called “Mini Player” that lets you watch two channels at once. With one-tap you can switch between which channel is in the larger frame and playing audio.
To support this, Live TV Streaming Services like Hulu Live TV, YouTube TV, Philo will have to make modifications to their apps, but with native support, it should be easier than ever.
