Netflix Renews ‘Gentefied’ for Second Season, Amazon to Stream Gina Brillon’s Comedy Special
Netflix has renewed the Latinx comedy “Gentefied” for a second eight-episode season.
“Gentefied” is created and written by Marvin Lemus and Linda Yvette Chávez. The two adapted the show from their “Gente-fied: The Digital Series.”
The show is about Mexican-American cousins in Los Angeles who face issues of class, community and the economic disruption that confronts neighborhoods, in their case, the family taco shop.
“Gentefied” opened with 10 episodes in February and stars Karrie Martin, Joseph Julian Soria, Carlos Santos and Joaquin Cosio.
On May 20, the cast and creators are also teaming for a live virtual table read on the “Netflix Is a Joke” YouTube channel. George Lopez hosts the event, which raises awareness for Proyecto Pastoral, an LA nonprofit that addresses the impact of COVID-19 on the low-income residents of Boyle Heights.
The actor/comic is making his Netflix debut on June 30 with the special “We’ll Do It for Half.” Lopez will offer his comedic take on race, politics and the importance of elders in the Latino community. The one-hour show was filmed at the Warfield in San Francisco.
Also on the comedy front, Amazon Prime Video will air the “Gina Brillon: The Floor Is Lava” special on June 5. Here, she talks about childhood, culture and married life with her Midwestern husband. Raised in the Bronx, Brillon is the only Latina winner of NBC’s Stand up for Diversity showcase. This is her third TV special.
The first “Pacifically Speaking” aired on Nuvo TV and the second, “Easily Offended,” ran on HBO. Brillon has also appeared on “Kevin Can Wait” and “The Conners.”
