Engadget reported that Disney CFO Christine McCarthy explained this move as a continuation of Disney’s plans to discontinue offering superhero films on Netflix after Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp. She said that this decision could cost the company up to $150 million in lost licensing fees, but that they see the short term loss as an investment in the future of their streaming potential.
Iger clarified that to build up for the launch of the Disney+ streaming service, the company needs to offer a variety of content, and its even better if it isn’t available elsewhere.
Disney has not yet announced a launch date for Disney+, but there is a demo planned for April 11, when consumers can expect to learn more information about the service. No potential prices have been released yet. Disney has confirmed that they will primarily rely on exclusive content to fill out the service.
