What is DIRECTV Gemini?

What is DIRECTV Gemini?

DIRECTV launched its Gemini in spring of 2023, and it’s the best way to enjoy a DIRECTV via internet subscription!

DIRECTV is one of the top pay-TV providers on the market because of the amount of choice it offers customers. That starts with the mode consumers choose to have their channels delivered; customers can pick between getting DIRECTV through a traditional satellite dish or getting it via the internet.

Customers who opt for a DIRECTV via Internet package can use their own device — like a smart TV or streaming device — or they can have the company send them a Gemini streaming player 1. But what is the Gemini, and how can you use it to get the most out of your streaming experience?

What Is the Gemini Device from DIRECTV?

The Gemini is a streaming player that connects to your TV, either wirelessly on your home Wi-Fi network or through a wired connection. It is powered by Android TV, so not only does it come with a voice-powered Google Assistant remote 2, but it also comes with native streaming apps for all your favorite subscription streaming services, like Netflix, Disney+, Max, Prime Video 3, and many more.

DIRECTV internet customers won’t need to connect their Gemini to DIRECTV’s older Genie device in order to start streaming their top cable channels with their subscription, either; simply connect and get to watching.

How Much is a Gemini Device?

The first Gemini device is sent to new DIRECTV via Internet subscribers at no cost 1. You can purchase additional devices for $120 each. (Equip. lease not available in select sales channels). Subscribers will have to pay a $15 per month advance receiver service fee to use their Gemini streaming device.

Is the Gemini 4K Compatible?

Ultra-high-definition 4K streaming is an incredible way to watch live TV, particularly live sports. It’s the best screen resolution available commercially, and many streaming services are offering content in 4K so subscribers can enjoy the best possible viewing experience.

The Gemini is not only compatible with 4K quality video, but if it is connected to a 4K TV, the device detects it and will allow them to automatically watch in 4K when available. (Note: Limited 4K content is available for some 3rd party apps when connecting Via Internet. 4K TV required and video quality is defined by resolution.)

Do You Need a Google Account to Operate Your Gemini Device?

A Google account is required to access the Google Play Store to download additional apps, to use Google Assistant (AKA “Just Ask Google”) for browsing using the Gemini device, and Google Photos. Third-party apps require separate (sometimes paid) subscriptions/login to access their content 2 from the Google Play Store. But technically, if you don’t use those features, you won’t need a Google account.

There are other reasons why you would want to use the Just Ask Google features, though. Those include:

  • Jump right to your favorite show/movie just by saying the title
  • Search by genre or mood by saying a command like “search for funny shows”
  • Get personalized recommendations by saying “what should I watch?”
  • Get answers like weather, stock prices, and sports scores
  • Control your compatible smart home devices using your voice
  • Interact with Google notes, like asking: “what’s on my shopping list?”

Heads up: Your Google Account ID is different from your DIRECTV user ID. If you don’t have a Google Account, you can create one online now or while setting up your Gemini device.

Does the Gemini Include DVR Storage?

No, the Gemini does not have DVR storage itself. However, the device does allow DIRECTV via Internet customers to access DIRECTV’s Cloud DVR service, which has unlimited storage for subscribers and keeps recordings for up to 9 months. When recording a series, there is a cap of 30 episodes stored with your unlimited hours of cloud DVR and the oldest will be deleted first - which means that it may be deleted before your 9-month limit.

Do You Need a Gemini Device with a DIRECV Via Internet Subscription?

Viewers who sign up for DIRECTV via Internet are welcome to use their own streaming device if it’s compatible with the DIRECTV app. Any devices that can use the app can be used to stream DIRECTV channels, without the need for a Gemini device.

However, the Gemini’s Google Assistant-powered remote and its automatic 4K-detection abilities help set it apart from other streaming devices. If you’re already considering signing up for DIRECTV via Internet, the Gemini is an excellent way to enjoy your favorite cable channels and streaming services!
