Which Movies Should You Stream Before ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Hits Theaters Next Month?

Which Movies Should You Stream Before ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Hits Theaters Next Month?

You only have a few weeks left to get caught up, but thankfully Disney+ has all the movies you’ll need on one platform.

With Deadpool & Wolverine hitting theaters in July, now is the time to start getting caught up on the MCU!

The team-up that fans have been clamoring for for years is finally ready for audiences. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is set to hit movie theaters in the United States on July 26. As of the time of this writing, that leaves viewers about six weeks to get caught up on all the titles they’ll need to watch to be completely ready for the brain-melting awesomeness they’re likely to see when the movie finally comes out. But just exactly which titles are those? I’ve assembled a handy guide below, so fans of the two characters can be completely caught up before heading to their local cinema next month.

Key Details:

  • Deadpool fans will want to start their marathon with “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” despite the film’s dubious quality.
  • Wolverine lovers should seek out 2000’s “X-Men” to see Hugh Jackman’s first turn as the character.
  • All the movies and shows you’ll need to get caught up for “Deadpool & Wolverine” can be found on Disney+.

Disney has been on a marketing blitz with “Deadpool & Wolverine,” which could be the first Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to cross the $1 billion mark at the box office since 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.” The latest teaser released gives fans even more footage, including a possible, blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance by Lady Deadpool (Blake Lively, is that you?).

Which Deadpool Movies Should You Watch to Prepare for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’?

Even though “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” is one of the most reviled films in the X-Men franchise, it is the first time Ryan Reynolds ever stepped into the role of Deadpool. Fans won’t really recognize the character they see named Deadpool onscreen, but fortunately, they can pivot to the new run of “Deadpool” movies that started in 2016, which presents the character as he appears in the comics.

  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine

    April 28, 2009

After seeking to live a normal life, Logan sets out to avenge the death of his girlfriend by undergoing the mutant Weapon X program and becoming Wolverine.

  • Deadpool

    February 9, 2016

The origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who, after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.

  • Deadpool 2

    May 10, 2018

Wisecracking mercenary Deadpool battles the evil and powerful Cable and other bad guys to save a boy’s life.

Which Wolverine Movies Should You Watch to Prepare for ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’?

Hugh Jackman first took the mantle of Wolverine in 2000’s “X-Men,” and ever since fans have been unable to picture anyone else in the role. Jackman completely embodies the gruff, loveable Logan, and it’s tempting to put movies like “The Wolverine” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past” on this list just because he’s so good in them. These movies should be considered extras on your “Deadpool & Wolverine” catch-up list, however, since they probably won’t figure into the movie in any major way.

  • X-Men

    July 13, 2000

Two mutants, Rogue and Wolverine, come to a private academy for their kind whose resident superhero team, the X-Men, must oppose a terrorist organization with similar powers.

  • X2

    April 27, 2003

Professor Charles Xavier and his team of genetically gifted superheroes face a rising tide of anti-mutant sentiment led by Col. William Stryker. Storm, Wolverine and Jean Grey must join their usual nemeses—Magneto and Mystique—to unhinge Stryker’s scheme to exterminate all mutants.

  • Logan

    February 28, 2017

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hideout on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are upended when a young mutant arrives, pursued by dark forces.

Are There Any Marvel TV Shows You’ll Want to See Before Watching ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’?

It’s a wrench not to recommend “X-Men '97” in this category, as it was one of my favorite shows of 2024 so far. However, the animated series won’t play a major role in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” According to the promotional material, however, the Time Variance Authority will have a big part to play in the film. The TVA is the body that oversees time and the multiverse in the MCU, and was first introduced in “Loki,” making that show’s two seasons must-see viewing to understand who the villain is in “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

Loki

June 9, 2021

After stealing the Tesseract during the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” an alternate version of Loki is brought to the mysterious Time Variance Authority, a bureaucratic organization that exists outside of time and space and monitors the timeline. They give Loki a choice: face being erased from existence due to being a “time variant” or help fix the timeline and stop a greater threat.
