Can You Record on ESPN+? Everything You Need to Know
You don’t get a DVR with ESPN+, but you can still watch some events after they occur.
ESPN+ is one of the best ways to stream live sports, especially if you’re a fan of hockey or college events. But unlike most live TV streamers, ESPN+ does not have a DVR. You can watch some events on demand, however. We’ll explain everything you need to know.
Exploring the ESPN+ On Demand Sections
Whether you want to watch a studio show like “NFL PrimeTime” or a game that happened in the past, ESPN+ does include lots of options for on-demand viewing.
You can scroll down to the “Event Replays” section to see a list of available recordings. Another option is to use the search function and add the name of your team.
Perhaps the best way to see what’s available is to click through an individual league’s section. You will find lots of NHL replays and college events, but there are no NFL replays. The availability of each sport’s recordings will depend on the rights ESPN has.
If you connect a live TV provider through ESPN+, you will have access to even more recordings. I connected my Sling TV account and I’m able to watch many more replays than I would with ESPN+ alone. I appreciate not having to go back to Sling to find a replay. The ESPN+ fast-forward and rewind is much better than Sling’s, so that’s a major plus. You can also skip commercials, which is not always possible with some on-demand experiences.
Frustratingly, you can’t see the replays available on a calendar or simply “pin” a team to the ESPN+ homepage to see any replays. The app makes you dig for the recordings.
Because ESPN+ can’t access recordings of every live event, the on-demand option isn’t perfect. It’s a nice fallback when available, but true sports fans will want to safeguard their recordings with a live TV provider like DIRECTV STREAM, DIRECTV Via Internet, Fubo, Hulu Live TV, Sling TV or YouTube TV.
