What is ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ about?

“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” follows four kids who discover a mysterious starship (the Onyx Cinder) on their home planet and take off in it, becoming totally lost in space. Now, they have to figure out how to get home, while dealing with all the dangerous Star Wars characters and worlds around them. Along the way, they uncover secrets about the galaxy—and themselves—that change the way they see their world. While the heroes are young, the show is for everyone, balancing a coming-of-age story with the high-stakes adventure expected in Star Wars.

Set during the New Republic era, the show takes place in the same timeline as “The Mandalorian” and “Ahsoka.” This allows it to explore the post-Imperial period, a time of rebuilding after the fall of the Galactic Empire while offering a fresh look at the galaxy’s evolving political and social upheaval through the eyes of these young kids.

The tone of “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” is akin to the adventurous spirit of 1980s films like Richard Donner’s “The Goonies” and Steven Spielberg’s “E.T.” Co-creator Christopher Ford sees the series as an exploration of what happens when kids are thrust into extraordinary circumstances far beyond their control. Like those iconic Amblin films, “Skeleton Crew” balances moments of excitement with the real dangers of the unknown, all seen through the eyes of its young heroes. With galaxy-spanning stakes and the smaller, emotional journeys of its characters as they learn to rely on one another, there should be something for every Star Wars fan in “Skeleton Crew.”

  • Wendle: Played by Tunde Adebimpe, Wendle is Wim’s father.

  • Fara: Played by Kerry Condon, Fara is Fern’s mother.

  • SM-33: Voiced by Nick Frost, SM-33 is a decrepit droid and the first mate of the Onyx Cinder starship.

  • Gunter: Gunter, played by Jaleel White, is part of a band of pirates the kids come across in their travels. The Gran species is characterized by their three-eyed appearance.

  • Brutus: Voiced by Fred Tatasciore, Brutus is another pirate.

  • Pax: Played by Mike Estes, Pax is part of the pirate group.

  • Chaelt: Played by Dale Soules, Chaelt is another one of the pirates the kids meet along the way.

Who are the creators behind ‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’?

“Star Wars: Skeleton Crew” is created by Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, the creative team best known for their work on the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s “Spider-Man” movies starring Tom Holland. Jon Watts directed all three films in the trilogy, while Christopher Ford wrote the screenplay for “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”

While Watts and Ford don’t have any direct hands-on experience with the Star Wars universe, they have experienced executive producers who do: Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. Filoni is the Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm, and created “Ahsoka,” while Favreau created “The Mandalorian.”
