FIFA finally names DAZN broadcast partner for 2025 Club World Cup
After months of struggling to land a media rights deal for the expanded tournament, FIFA finally found a partner.
The new FIFA Club World Cup will have a TV partner after all. The worldwide soccer governing body has had some trouble in getting a TV network or streaming service to meet its asking price for the rights to the new soccer tournament, which will include clubs from top leagues all around the world, including Major League Soccer and the English Premier League. But as announced on Wednesday, the tournament will stream each match on the sports streamer DAZN, and will be available there worldwide.
Key Details:
- DAZN will stream all 63 matches of the 2025 Club World Cup for free.
- The deal is worth around $1 billion, far less than FIFA was originally seeking.
- Apple was once considered the frontrunner for the rights but refused to meet FIFA’s price.
Under the terms of the deal, DAZN will be able to stream all 63 games from the inaugural Club World Cup for free on its platform. In addition, the streamer has the right to sublicense game broadcasts to free, over-the-air linear TV channels.
“This groundbreaking deal with FIFA is a major milestone in DAZN’s journey to be the ultimate entertainment platform of choice for sports fans everywhere,” said DAZN CEO Shay Segev. “We’re delighted to have the exclusive rights to this new chapter in global club football, marking the start of our long-term relationship with FIFA and cementing our status as the home of football.”
The deal is valued at around $1 billion, which is much less than FIFA originally wanted. Apple was once a frontrunner for the rights to the Club World Cup, but talks fell through thanks to the asking price. FIFA was reportedly asking for $4 billion for the rights to the tournament, and opened bidding to all comers after talks with Apple disintegrated.
Months passed and still no partner was found, causing FIFA to call an emergency meeting with global TV executives to discuss the problem. Those negotiations clearly took a while, as the deal with DAZN didn’t come down the pipe for another 10 weeks or so.
The broadcast partnership begins with DAZN broadcasting the Club World Cup draw live from Miami on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at 1 p.m. ET. It will also see the FIFA+ streaming service — FIFA’s library of iconic football moments and full-match replays — on the DAZN platform. The tournament itself will begin on Sunday, June 15, 2025.
In the United States, DAZN is more known as a combat sports streamer, but it has been expanding programming to include EuroLeague Women's Basketball and other choices. It’s $20 per month for a paid subscription, but you can sign up for a free account to watch the 2025 FIFA World Cup draw, as well as live matches themselves when the tournament begins.
