Samsung TV Plus Surprises With Announcement of 88 Million Monthly Users

The announcement shows how popular Samsung smart TVs are around the globe.

Samsung TV Plus is the free streaming service that comes embedded in Samsung Smart TVs.

Samsung is a well-known leader in the device manufacturing world, selling tens of millions of smart TVs around the world. According to Coolest Gadgets, Samsung has a 23% share of the smart TV market, the largest of any single manufacturer in the world. As its televisions spread to more and more households, the user pool for its free streaming service Samsung TV Plus also continues to grow. Samsung revealed just how large it had grown on Monday, when it announced that Samsung TV Plus now has 88 million monthly active users, making it the largest free streaming service in terms of viewers and passing streaming giants like The Roku Channel and Tubi.

Key Details:

  • Samsung TV Plus has seen over a 50% rise in global viewership year-over-year.
  • On-demand viewing jumped 400% on the service in the last year.
  • Roku Channel announced it had 83.6 million monthly active users at last count, and Tubi 78 million.

The 88 million user figure is impressive, but Samsung had more vital statistics to share. Its global viewership rose more than 50% year-over-year, and it over-indexes in the key 18-49 year-old demographic, which is of special interest to advertisers.

Samsung TV Plus also saw on-demand viewing jump more than 400% YoY, showing that its live streaming channels weren’t the only draw for consumers. The Samsung TV Plus app became the most used on Samsung smart TVs, which is arguably even more impressive than when the company announced viewership had risen 60% on the service last November.

Samsung TV Plus's 88 million monthly active users beats Roku and Tubi.

“The success of Samsung TV Plus reflects our commitment to delivering a superior user experience with high-quality content that resonates with consumers,” Samsung SVP Salek Brodsky said. “When we embarked on this ambitious journey, our vision was to offer a premium streaming alternative that was both simple to use and free. The strategic bets we made nearly a decade ago have established a strong foundation for a service now enjoyed by 88 million streamers each month, and the path ahead is bright and promises continued growth well into the future.”

The data shows that Samsung is beating some true giants in free streaming in the United States. The Roku Channel, for example, last reported in August that it was used in 83.6 million streaming households, nearly 5 million fewer than Samsung despite being the most popular manufacturer of streaming devices in the U.S.

With the announcement of these numbers, it appears that Samsung just might be the new reigning free streaming leader. The last time that Tubi publicly reported monthly active users was in March, when it revealed it had 78 million of them. It may have more than that now, although a jump of 10 million since March seems unlikely, even for a streamer of Tubi's popularity.

Free, ad-supported streaming is growing increasingly crucial to viewers as subscription streaming services continue to raise their prices with seemingly no end in sight. Samsung smart TV owners have a clear affinity for Samsung TV Plus, the app that comes native to their set and provides hundreds of free streaming channels and thousands of on-demand titles.
