Is Demi Moore’s New Movie ‘The Substance’ Streaming? When Will it Be Available to Watch at Home?
‘The Substance’ is being distributed by MUBI, but does that mean the MUBI streaming service is where you’ll be able to watch it at home first?
Demi Moore returns to the silver screen in the new body horror flick “The Substance.” The movie makes its official theatrical debut in the United States on Friday, Sept. 20, but how long will it be until you’re able to stream it from the comforts of your own couch? Get our expert prediction below!
Key Details:
- “The Substance” has compiled a promising critical and audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
- The film is being distributed in the United States by MUBI, and will most likely wind up on that streamer first.
- A theatrical-exclusive window of fewer than 90 days seems most likey.
Watch the Trailer for ‘The Substance’:
“The Substance” stars Moore as Elisabeth, a popular TV aerobics instructor who is unceremoniously fired out of the blue. A car accident seemingly worsens her trouble, until a nurse gives her information on a mysterious serum known only as “The Substance” that can help her transform into a younger, more beautiful version of herself. What could go wrong?
Critics and audiences who have gotten preview screenings of “The Substance” agree the film is well worth seeing. It’s got an 88% score from reviewers on Rotten Tomatoes, to go along with an 83% audience score. Critics have especial praise for Moore, but caution that the body horror flick does indeed have plenty of gross parts.
Written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, “The Substance” stars Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid in addition to Demi Moore
When Can You Stream ‘The Substance’ On-Demand?
Let’s start with what we do know about “The Substance.” The movie is being distributed by MUBI, which means it’s most likely to end up on that streaming platform instead of Netflix or Hulu when it leaves theaters. MUBI could license the film elsewhere, but recent movies it has distributed like “Gasoline Rainbow,” “Yannick,” and “The Settlers” have all gone to MUBI first.
What we don’t know is how long it will take. MUBI’s release windows are a bit scattershot; “Gasoline Rainbow” was only in theaters for three weeks before going to streaming, whereas “The Settlers” took 77 days to premiere on the on-demand platform. MUBI’s got plenty of release windows between those two time frames as well, but I think it will lean toward a longer release for a buzzy movie with star power like “The Substance.”
I’ll stick with the 77-day window for “The Substance,” which would put its release date on MUBI as Friday, Dec. 6. Body horror may not be everyone’s idea of holiday fun, but those that do fit into this category will be able to revel in “The Substance” and its bloody story as the snow falls this December.
