Max Posts Massive Subscriber Increase in Q3 2024, Jumping to 110.5 Million Globally
The Warner Bros. Discovery streaming service had its largest quarterly gain since launching.
Did Max live up to expectations this quarter? Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said he expected to add 6 million streaming customers in the third quarter of 2024, and on Thursday, Nov. 7, the company revealed that it had exceeded expectations, bringing on 7.2 million new customers.
That brings its new total to 110.5 million, after ending the second quarter with 103.3 million globally. In the United States and Canada, WBD now has 52.6 million customers, and its international total now stands at 57.9 million.
From a revenue standpoint, Max had some ups and downs in the quarter compared to Q2. Average revenue per user (ARPU) reached $7.84, down a bit from $8 last quarter. As a company, WBD had a net income of $135 million during the quarter.
What Were the Biggest Max Stories During the Quarter?
Max seems more and more likely to lose live NBA games after the current season. WBD is still trying to sue the NBA to claw back one of its three broadcast rights packages, but if a motion to dismiss the suit by the Association is granted, the company will have exhausted its legal means to try to keep pro basketball past 2024-25.
WBD boosted the Max distribution during the third quarter. It struck a deal with Charter Communications to allow Spectrum TV Select subscribers to access a free ad-supported Max account, and can also be bundled with a Sling TV subscription thanks to a new deal with Sling’s parent company DISH.
Max also made a deal to add new sports entertainment content during the quarter. WBD’s new contract with All Elite Wrestling will allow both weekly shows and pay-per-view events to stream on Max.
