Netflix faces new lawsuit over bad quality of Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight
A man in Florida is seeking class-action status for his suit over the frequent interruptions he and thousands of others experienced during the fight.
The Netflix legal team is going to wrack up a lot of billable hours over the next several months. The company is facing a new lawsuit, this time related to the poor stream quality for its live boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson on Friday, Nov. 15. One customer was so frustrated with his inability to watch the fight reliably that he’s taking his complaints to court.
Key Details:
- The lawsuit has been filed by Ronald Denton of Hillsborough County, Florida.
- Denton says that issues with past live-streamed events should have prepared Netflix better for the fight.
- Hundreds of thousands of viewers reported the stream was slow, poor quality or simply unwatchable.
The suit against Netflix is being filed by Florida resident Ronald “Blue” Denton of Hillsborough County. His case argues that the streamer was “woefully ill-prepared” to stream the fight and that the numerous technical issues during the stream made it “unwatchable.”
He also argues that having had this type of problem with live events before, Netflix should have been better equipped to handle the bugs that cropped up on fight night. Specifically, he cites the problems that plagued the stream of a live reunion episode of “Love is Blind” as a reason that Netflix should have been ready for problems with the Paul vs. Tyson bout.
According to online reports, more than 100,000 people had issues with the stream of the fight. Many viewers were reportedly unable to connect at all, while others say the image quality of the event was poor, slow, and plagued with continuous pauses.
Despite the problems, Netflix says the fight saw 108 million people around the globe tune in. The co-main event between Amanda Serrano and Katie Taylor became the most-watched women’s sports event in history thanks to the large audience Netflix was able to draw.
Denton wants to make his case a class-action one, which will encompass all viewers who had an issue watching the fight. While that develops, Netflix is facing another potential class-action lawsuit this week; the streamer is facing an antitrust case filed by former users of the Facebook Watch streaming service. It says that Netflix and Meta conspired to hobble Facebook Watch so Netflix could have supremacy in the streaming marketplace.
