About 2024 NHL All-Star Skills

The format for the 2024 All-Star Skills competition will look a little different this year. Credit to the NHL for going to the world’s best play - Connor McDavid – and asking him what he and his peers want out of a skills competition. And he told them – less gimmicks, and more hockey skill-testing events than before. The NHL took that feedback and created the format for what you’ll see Friday night.

The first big change is that only 12 skaters will participate, and they’ll be awarded points based on how they perform in their respective events. Quinn Hughes and J.T. Miller, who were voted in by fans, will be teaming up with fellow Canuck Elias Pettersson, alongside other notable NHL stars like Boston Bruins’ David Pastrnak, Colorado Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar, Edmonton Oilers’ Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid, New York Islanders’ forward Mathew Barzal (who’s replacing the injured Jack Hughes), Tampa Bay Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov, and the Toronto Maple Leafs duo of Auston Matthews and William Nylander.

All twelve All-Stars will compete in four out of the initial six events, which include the Fastenal NHL Fastest Skater, Rogers NHL Hardest Shot, Scotiabank NHL Passing Challenge, Tim Hortons NHL One Timers, Upper Deck NHL Stick Handling, and Cheetos NHL Accuracy Shooting. First place receives five points, and then each place receives one fewer point down to sixth place and lower, which receive zero points. Then, the eight skaters with the highest point totals after the first six events will progress to the Honda NHL One-on-One - a round where each player selects the goaltender they want to face in a shootout. All eight NHL All-Star goaltenders will be on hand to participate. Finally, the top six players advance to the final round: the Pepsi NHL Obstacle Course, where players can win double points for their performance. The skater who puts up the highest point total across all eight events will skate away with the $1 million prize.

John Buccigross of ESPN will provide play-by-play commentary for each event at the Skills contest, joined by the renowned Hockey Hall of Famer Mark Messier as analyst. Reporting from the ice will be P.K. Subban and Kevin Weekes, with Emily Kaplan delivering coverage from around the rink. Catch all the action on ESPN+ and ESPN.
