Where to Watch Florida Panthers vs. Detroit Red Wings Game Live Online on November 2, 2023: Streaming/TV Channels

This isn’t the start anyone outside the Detroit Red Wings dressing room expected, but the team comes into their home game against the Florida Panthers with a 6-3-1 record sitting second in the Atlantic Division behind only the red-hot Boston Bruins. The Wings are coming off an overtime win against the New York Islanders on Monday with Lucas Raymond scoring 1:25 in the extra frame. Goals have come steadily for Detroit, as they’re averaging 4.0 goals per game, tied for third in the NHL behind only the Kings and Devils.

The Panthers have had a slower start. After going to the Stanley Cup Finals in 2022-2023 and losing to the Golden Knights, Florida is 4-3-1 to start the season, sitting 6th in the Atlantic Division with 9 points. Injuries have already piled up for Florida and got even worse when Sam Bennett – who missed the first seven games of the season – was re-injured in the Panther’s 3-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on Monday when he was taken down by Hampus Lindholm in front of the net. Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour are also out of the line-up and are said to be weeks away from returning.

The Panthers enter this game the favorite, but only by a hair. With their injuries on the back end, as well as the re-injured Sam Bennet expected to be out longer than day-to-day, this one’s bound to be a tight game. Florida is coming in with a 4-3-1 record, having won two in a row against the Sharks and Kraken before losing to Boston in overtime 3-2 on Oct. 30. The bright spot was a goal and assist by Aleksander Barkov, who’s had a slower than usual start to the season. Barkov’s now got two goals and eight points in seven games. The Panthers would love it if Matthew Tkachuk could get his mojo back – he’s got just one goal (but six assists) in his eight games played.

For Detroit, their offense has been pumping. They’re averaging four goals per game, led by Dylan Larkin who has 15 points in 10 games, tied for third in the NHL. Close behind him is Alex DeBrincat with 13 points in 10 games. If there’s a question mark for the Red Wings, it’s in net. Ville Husso has seven starts, going 4-2-1 with a 3.28 GAA and .900 SV%. These numbers aren’t terrible (and have been relieved by Detroit’s offense), but they’re not great either. James Reimer has been much better – he’s 2-1 with a 1.68 GAA and .939 SV% - but has only started three games. It’s possible that Reimer gets the start against the Panthers.

Team Stats

Statistic Florida Detroit
Goals For 22 40
Goals Against 23 31
Diff -1 +9
Total Points 9 13
Points Percentage .563 .650

The Red Wings are playing great offensive hockey, averaging 4.0 goals per game and 3.1 goals against per game. Their powerplay is impressive too, going 12-for-37, good enough for 32.43 percent – a full 12 percent over the league average. That’s good enough for fourth in the NHL. Their PK is ranked thirteenth, killing 81.1 percent when a man down. The fancy stats crowd with point to the Wings goal differential above expected sitting 7.87 and say Detroit is running a bit of luck. Only time will tell.

The Panthers, meanwhile, are running in place without key defensemen Aaron Ekblad and Brandon Montour. They are -1 in goal differential with 22 goals for and 23 against and sit with nine points out of a possible 16. They’re averaging 2.75 goals per game, are running at 14.3% on the PP and 67.9% on the PK. They’ll need to stay out of the penalty box if they’re going to have a chance against the Red Wings and their fourth-best powerplay.

Florida and Detroit Goalie Matchup:

Goalie Team Record Sv% GAA SO
Sergei Bobrovski Florida 3-3-1 .904 2.87 0
Ville Husso Detroit 4-2-1 .900 3.28 0

Sergei Bobrovski has been very average to start the season. He enters the game 3-3-1, with a .904 save percentage and a 2.87 goals against. His goals saved above expected sits at -0.1, which ranks 41 out of 69 goalies. But, as Florida fans saw in the run to the Stanley Cup Finals last year, Goalie Bob can get hot quickly. The Panthers hope it happens against a very good Red Wings team.

Detroit’s offense has covered up for below-average goaltending this year. Ville Husso has seven starts, going 4-2-1 with a 3.28 GAA and .900 SV, which ranks 50th and 42nd respectively. He’s saved 1.6 goals above expected, which ranks him 24th in the league. James Reimer has been better – he’s 2-1 with a 1.68 GAA and .939 SV% - but has only started three games. His goals against ranks him 6th in the league, and his save percentage is 9th. If Detroit starts Reimer, it makes an upset more likely.
