The 49ers, who have already clinched the NFC West division title, come in as the favorite and have a shot at securing the NFC’s No. 1 seed. This would give them a lone first-round bye and home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs. But, they’ll need some help getting there. To secure the first-round bye, the 49ers need to win this game against the Ravens, and need the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Detroit Lions all to lose their respective Week 16 games.

The Ravens, meanwhile, have already clinched a playoff berth, but are looking to win the AFC North division title. They can lock it in with a win against the 49ers, combined with either a loss or tie by the Cleveland Browns, or a tie in their game coupled with a Browns loss.

Team Stats

Statistic Baltimore San Francisco
Points Scored per Game 27.4 30.4
Points Allowed per Game 16.1 16.7
Total Yards Gained 5,238 5,636
Total Yards Allowed 4,030 4,341

Under the leadership of head coach Kyle Shanahan, the San Francisco 49ers are running one of the best offenses in the NFL. Their 30.4 points per game is second only to the Dolphins, and they’re led by quarterback Brock Purdy, who has put himself firmly in the MVP conversation with his performance this season. His 3,795 total passing yards ranks No. 2 in the NFL, while his 29 touchdowns leads the league. Add in running back Christian McCaffrey who has joined the ranks of 49ers legends by scoring 20 touchdowns in a season - a feat previously achieved by the Hall of Famer Jerry Rice, and a defense that’s allowing just 16.7 points per game (No. 2 in the NFL) and leading the league in takeaways, and you can understand why the 49ers are where they are.

Coach John Harbaugh and the Ravens probably like the position they’re in. Their defense, under the coordination of Mike Macdonald, has been the best in the NFL by allowing touchdowns on only 11.3% of drives and keeping teams to only 16.1 points per game on average. Despite not allowing a rushing touchdown in their last four games, the Ravens’ defense will face a tough test against the 49ers’ powerhouse offense. Offensively, the Ravens boast the top-ranked rushing attack, averaging 163.8 yards per game. The recent injury to RB Keaton Mitchell may see an increased reliance on Gus Edwards and Justice Hill.

Baltimore and San Francisco Quarterback Matchup:

QB Team CMP ATT CMP% YDS AVG TD INT RTG
Lamar Jackson Baltimore 266 401 66.3 3,105 7.7 17 7 96.5
Brock Purdy San Francisco 268 384 69.8 3,795 9.9 29 7 119.0

Lamar Jackson’s ability to impact the game both through the air and with his running ability will be a key storyline as they face the 49ers. In 14 games this season, Jackson has maintained a passer rating of 96.5, tossing for 3,105 passing yards (No. 15 in the NFL), 17 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. Jackson’s completion rate stands at 66.3% with an average of 221.8 passing yards per game. He’s coming off a solid performance against the Jaguars where he went 14-for-24, tossing for 171 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the 23-7 win.

At the other end of the field, no one has been better than Brock Purdy this season. His 29 touchdowns pace the league, his 3,795 total passing yards ranks second behind only Tua Tagovailoa, and his 9.9 yards per attempt ranks first. He also ranks No. 1 in Adjusted Yards Per Attempt, True Passer Rating, and QBR. Purdy also holds the remarkable streak of completing at least 70% of his passes in seven consecutive games, a feat not seen since Joe Montana’s era. Purdy is also the first quarterback in NFL history to have five games with a passer rating of 140 or higher in his first two seasons. It should come as no surprise that he’s a favorite in the MVP race.
