Where to Watch Kraken vs. Lightning Game Live Online on October 30, 2023

The Tampa Bay Lightning host the Seattle Kraken in the final game of a five-game homestand that could see them collect nine out of a possible ten points with a win in front of their home fans. Nikita Kucherov has done what he usually does with six goals and 11 points to start the season, while goaltender Jonas Johansson has posted two shutouts in five starts. The Lightning are coming into this game hot after blowing out the San Jose Sharks 6-0 in their last game.

The Kraken have struggled this season, going 2-5-2 with a -11 goal differential and sitting 5th in the Pacific Division. They’ve had trouble scoring goals, with Oliver Bjorkstrand and defenseman Vince Dunn leading the Kraken with seven points each. They blew a two-goal lead against the Florida Panthers in their last game after a weird bounce off the stanchion late in the third handed the Panthers the game-winning goal. After a Cinderella season that saw the Kraken make the postseason last year and get to the second round, they’re going to have to find their stride soon to keep pace with the top half of the Pacific.

The Tampa Bay Lightning have had a fairly strong start to the 2023-24 season and enter the game against the Kraken as the favorites. Tampa Bay is ranked 8th in goals scored with an average of 3.63 goals per game, and 12th in goals allowed with an average of three goals per game. Their power play has been very good, hovering around 32%, ranking 4th, and their penalty kill is rock solid at 95%, ranking 2nd. However, they are on the lower end in shots per game (28.6) and shots allowed per game (34.8), ranking 25th and 29th respectively. Their betting statistics reveal that they have won 66.7% of their games this season when they’ve been a Moneyline favorite.

On the other hand, the Seattle Kraken have struggled in the early part of the season. They are ranked 28th in goals scored with an average of 2.22 goals per game, and 24th in goals allowed with an average of 3.33 goals per game. Their power play and penalty kill percentages are lower compared to the Lightning, at 20% and 79.17% respectively. Plus, the Kraken have been the underdog in six games this season, winning only two of them. The implied Moneyline probability in this matchup gives the Lightning a 60.8% chance to win, highlighting the challenge that a good Tampa team poses to the Kraken.

Tampa Bay is building momentum after a slow start. They’re riding a two-game win streak and coming off a dominant 6-0 win over San Jose. They sit 5th in the Atlantic Division with ten points, behind Boston, Toronto, Montreal, and Detroit (?!). They have a .635 win percentage, and their 29 goals-for is good enough for 10th in the league. Kucherov continues to do Kucherov things with 11 points in his first eight games played while Stamkos has 3 goals in six games. Defenseman Victor Hedman leads the team in ice time with over 24 minutes per game and is even on the season in plus/minus.

The Seattle Kraken have lost two in a row for a 2-5-2 start. Their most recent loss came in a strange fashion to the Florida Panthers when a fluky dump-in hit the Zamboni door in exactly the wrong place for Kraken’s Joey Daccord. He went behind the net to play the rimmed puck, when it jumped out front right to Florida’s Nick Cousins who tapped it in for the game-winning goal. The bright stop may be their shooting percentage, which is the third-worst in the league. They have 20 actual goals but have an expected goals-for of 26, which means they’re getting a little unlucky when it comes to putting the puck in the net. Some may say these numbers reveal a lack of elite goal scorers on the team though, which will be determined over the course of the season. No matter how you look at it, it’s a disappointing start for a team that made it to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs last year.

Tampa Bay and Seattle Goalie Matchup:

Goalie Team Record Sv% GAA SO
Jonas Johansson Tampa Bay 4-1-2 .925 2.56 2
Joey Daccord Seattle 2-1-2 .912 2.88 0

As is always the case with the Tampa Bay Lightning, goaltending this year has been strong… but not from the usual suspects. Perpetual All-Star and Stanley Cup winner Andrei Vasilevskiy is rehabbing from surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back. He’s expected to be back around Thanksgiving. In the meantime, Jonas Johnansson has been carrying the workload, going 4-1-2 to start the season with a .925 SV% and 2.56 GAA. Those are really solid numbers – but kind of par for the course for the Lightning who are used to great goalies giving consistent performances.

At the other end, Joey Daccord and Philip Grubauer have split starts. Daccord has played five games, going 2-1-2 with a 2.88 GAA and a .912 SV%. That’s better than Grubauer’s 0-4 record with a 3.04 GAA and a .896 SV%. There’s no question the Lightning have the advantage in goal which is one of the reasons they’re the favorite in this game.
