If You Stream the Super Bowl on Paramount+, Will You See All of the Big Game Commercials?

The Super Bowl will air on CBS on Sunday, Feb. 11 and a Paramount+ rep confirmed to The Streamable how commercials will work on the platform.

One of the initial draws to streaming services was their lack of commercials. In the pre-streaming days, there really wasn’t any choice but to have whatever show or game you were watching interrupted by an ad for dish soap or a used car salesman telling you about the insane price at the dealership this weekend. Commercials were annoying and they were intrusive; that’s one of the reasons that so many people jumped at the opportunity to stream their favorite pieces of entertainment without commercial interruptions. But what about when the commercials are the entertainment? For many people, the Super Bowl is far more about commercials than football. So, in an age when many viewers will be watching the Big Game via streaming, that raises the question of whether or not they will be able to see all of their favorite celebrities hawking beer, coffee, insurance, pharmaceuticals, and any other product that wants to pay millions of dollars for a 30-second spot even if they watch via streaming service.

  • Last year, approximately 75% of Super Bowl viewers were excited about the commercials.
  • The Super Bowl will be available via live TV streaming services and Paramount+, and all options will provide access to the commercials.
  • A Paramount representative confirmed to The Streamable that both Paramount+ tiers will feature all of the Super Bowl commercials.

Heading into last year’s Super Bowl, a Harris Poll found that 76% of people who were likely to watch the game were at least somewhat excited about the commercials. While your mileage may vary in terms of how entertaining you find the current era of Super Bowl ads, they are still an important part of the Big Game’s overall appeal.

Can You Watch Super Bowl Commercials With a Live TV Streaming Service?

Super Bowl LVIII will air on CBS on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 6:30 p.m. ET. So, for cord-cutters, there is a handful of ways that they can watch the game. First, they can subscribe to a live TV streaming service that carries the Eye Network. The Streamable’s expert recommendation is to go with DIRECTV STREAM, because of their industry-leading five-day free trial. If you wait until late next week, you will be able to watch the Super Bowl for free.

Since live streamers work almost exactly like cable and satellite providers, DIRECTV STREAM, Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, and their competitors will all carry the commercials, just as they air on the broadcast channel. A kids and family-focused version of the Super Bowl will air exclusively on Nickelodeon, complete with slime and all of your favorite characters from “SpongeBob SquarePants.” The only way to watch this broadcast is on Nickelodeon, as it will not be simulcast on Paramount+, so if you don’t have a traditional pay-TV subscription, a live TV streamer is the only way to see Patrick Star celebrate a touchdown and all of the commercials that come with this first-of-its-kind broadcast.

Can You Watch Super Bowl Commercials on Paramount+?

The next option to watch the Super Bowl for viewers who aren’t already signed up for a pay-TV service is Paramount Global’s flagship streaming service, Paramount+. The streamer has two subscription tiers, both of which will carry the game, just in slightly different ways. The lower-cost option is known as Paramount+ Essential. For on-demand titles, this tier is ad-supported, but when it comes to the Super Bowl and all other sports content, that won’t matter, because it is always ad-supported. The Essential tier costs $5.99 per month and carries all NFL on CBS games, including the Super Bowl.

The next step up is the Paramount+ With Showtime option, which costs $11.99 monthly. This is the ad-free tier and provides Super Bowl access via an around-the-clock live stream of your local CBS affiliate. Fortunately for football fans, Paramount+ has a promo code that is currently active that will allow you to pick either tier and receive a 30-day free trial. Just sign up with the code PAW30. This way, you can check out the Super Bowl and the eclectic library of titles on each level, but since this is streaming, what about the commercials?

The Streamable reached out to Paramount in order to find out what the commercial situation will be on the streaming service, and a company spokesperson confirmed that viewers will not miss a single ad, no matter what tier they are watching on.

“The stream on Paramount+ will mirror the CBS broadcast,” the spokesperson said. “All commercials will be the same on either plan.”

Paramount Plus

Paramount+ is a subscription video streaming service that includes on-demand access to 40,000+ TV show episodes from BET, CBS, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and more. The lineup includes “1883,” “Tulsa King,” “Star Trek: Discovery,” Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants,” and “PAW Patrol.” Subscribers can watch the NFL, college football, The Masters, college basketball, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa, Serie A, and NWSL. The service also offers the option to watch your live CBS affiliate. The upgraded ad-free package includes premium movies and shows from Showtime.

Subscribers can choose between the Essential Plan (which includes ads) for $5.99/month, or go commercial-free and add more movies with Paramount+ with SHOWTIME for $11.99/month.

Subscribers to the more expensive plan will also get access to your local CBS affiliate to stream your local news, prime-time lineup, and late-night. You will also be able to download offline and watch select shows in 4K.

With the lower-cost “Essential” plan, you will still be able to watch live NFL games, Champions League, and national news – but you will no longer get your local CBS affiliate.

With their new app, enjoy advanced recommendations, curated homepages, and new content categories while still being able to stream major live sports like NFL, College Football, College Basketball. Sports fans will also appreciate the service’s inclusion of NFL on CBS, PGA Tour, along with every match of UEFA Champions League and Serie A.

The service was previously called CBS All Access.

How Else Can You Watch the Super Bowl and Its Commercials Live?

The other way that cord-cutters can watch both the Super Bowl game and commercials is with an over-the-air antenna. This is the old-school way to make sure that you don’t miss a single second of action or advertising. Since this is the traditional way that CBS broadcasts its content, obviously, you will be able to watch all of the commercials with an OTA antenna.

There are tons of antenna options available, but these are two relatively inexpensive options that should do the trick for the Big Game.
