Is ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’ Available to Stream? When Will it Be Available on Netflix, Hulu?

The original Ghostbusters crew is back in action for the latest installment of the franchise, but when can you stream it at home?

Who ya gonna call? The supernatural spirit hunters known as the Ghostbusters are charging up their proton packs for another trip through cinemas! “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is officially premiering in theaters on Friday, March 22, and hopes to scare up big audiences.

  • “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” features the new and old Ghostbusters teams coming together to face a new threat.
  • As a Sony-distributed film, the new “Ghostbusters” will stream on Netflix first, then head to Hulu.
  • Because Sony does not have a streaming service of its own, it prefers to give films a long runway in theaters and on premium video-on-demand platforms.

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” will see old friends and new faces come together to fight evil in the very heart of Manhattan. The Spengler family decides to head back to New York City, where the original Ghostbusters have cooked up a lab for advanced ghost hunting. But an ancient evil awakens which threatens to plunge the world into another Ice Age, and there’s only one team that can stop it!

The movie may not be this year’s favorite among critics, as it has compiled a 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes thus far. But its audience score is a much more respectable 86%, suggesting that the average fan of the franchise will find it a welcome entrant alongside other films in the series.

When Will You Be Able to Stream ‘Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire’?

Because of Sony’s highly-publicized licensing deals, it’s easy to say which streamers will carry “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” once it’s ready for on-demand viewing. Netflix is Sony’s Pay 1 partner, so it will get an exclusive 18-month run of “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” when Sony is ready to release it.

After that 18-month stint, “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” will head to a Disney streaming service. As of now, it looks more likely that Hulu would get the movie, though of course the fact that audiences can now stream Hulu content on Disney+ points to the likelihood that “Frozen Empire” will appear on both services simultaneously.

But fans may be in for a wait if they want to stream the new “Ghostbusters” from home. Sony has no on-demand streaming service of its own, which means it gets very little financial benefit from movies once they leave theaters and premium rental/purchase platforms like Prime Video which allow customers to access movies that are still in cinemas. That leads Sony to give its films long windows in theaters and on premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms; even its stinker “Morbius” took 159 days to reach streaming after its initial release.

With that in mind, The Streamable’s experts predict the new “Ghostbusters” will be available to stream on Netflix starting Monday, August 19, the perfect way for kids to chase away the back-to-school blues. If that prediction is accurate, it would mean that Hulu would get its hands on the film in February 2026.

  • Hulu

Hulu is a video streaming service that gives access to thousands of full seasons of exclusive series, hit movies, kids shows, and Hulu Originals like “Only Murders in the Building,” and “The Handmaid's Tale.”

It offers a good selection of current TV shows and its ad-supported tier is cheaper than both Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. You will be able to watch most shows from networks like ABC and Fox, and cable channels like FXX, FXM, HGTV, and more.

The service has a Limited Commercials plan for $7.99 a month, or you can upgrade to their No Ads plan for $17.99 a month. For $76.99 a month, you can get Hulu Live TV from major cable channels, live locals and regional sports networks.

  • Netflix

Netflix is a subscription video streaming service that includes on-demand access to 3,000+ movies, 2,000+ TV Shows, and Netflix Originals like Stranger Things, Squid Game, The Crown, Tiger King, and Bridgerton. They are constantly adding new shows and movies. Some of their Academy Award-winning exclusives include Roma, Marriage Story, Mank, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Netflix offers three plans — on 2 device in HD with their “Standard with Ads” ($6.99) plan, on 2 devices in HD with their “Standard” ($15.49) plan, and 4 devices in up to 4K on their “Premium” ($22.99) plan.

Netflix spends more money on content than any other streaming service meaning that you get more value for the monthly fee.
