Max Debuts in Latin America, The Caribbean With Titles Including ‘Aquaman,’ ‘Barbie’; Here’s How to Transition From HBO Max

The move comes as Max is trying to build on its first year of profitability in 2023.

If you live in Latin America or the Caribbean, Max is coming to a screen near you. All 39 territories of those regions will be able to sign up for Warner Bros. Discovery’s streamer starting Tuesday, Feb. 27, replacing the HBO Max service that was formerly available in those countries. As it has since last spring in the United States and in other markets around the world, the new platform combines content from HBO Max and discovery+.

  • Max combines the libraries of HBO Max and discovery+, creating a powerful and well-stocked entertainment streaming platform.
  • The launch coincides with the release of the latest DC film “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” on Max.
  • WBD will launch Max in European territories later this year.

Customers in the territories now receiving Max will still find all their favorites from HBO on the streamer, such as “House of the Dragon” (which will premiere its second season later this year), “The Last of Us,” “The White Lotus” and others. The streamer also carries top-quality movies, like 2023’s box office leader “Barbie” and “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” which debuts on Max on Feb. 27.

In addition to those titles, viewers will find a wealth of new content from discovery+ available for the first time. Viewers will enjoy shows and movies from WBD channels like Magnolia Network, OWN, HGTV, Food Network, TLC, and more. Titles streaming on Max that weren’t formerly available include shows like “Fixer Upper” from Chip and Joanna Gaines, Brazilian and Latin American adaptations of reality series such as “Naked and Afraid,” and much more.

Those who were already subscribed to HBO Max in Latin America and the Caribbean will be able to retain their current profiles and settings, essentially keeping their account just the way it was before the changeover. Some viewers will have to update their HBO Max apps manually, but some devices will update the app automatically.

“The launch of Max in Latin America opens new paths of growth for Warner Bros. Discovery’s multiplatform offering, giving audiences in the region a variety of options to watch their favorite content,” said Fernando Medin, President of WBD Latin America. “Max will always have a great story to offer, for every moment, every mood and for everyone.”

How Does Latin American Launch Help Further WBD’s Streaming Goals?

Although its continuing linear declines and heavy debt load kept Wall Street from boosting its stock price, WBD revealed late last week that its streaming services turned a $103 million profit in 2023. Now, its mission is to continue building those profits as much as it can.

Expanding to new territories is a good way to attract more subscribers to its platforms. The switchover from HBO Max to Max in Latin America and the Caribbean is an excellent start, but those are not WBD’s only international expansion plans for 2024; Max will begin rolling out in Europe this spring, with viewers in Central and Eastern Europe as well as the Nordic territories due to get access to the platform first.

There’s a possibility that WBD is preparing to put itself on the market, and if it is made available for sale having a large and profitable international customer base will be attractive to prospective buyers. WBD is working hard to expand that customer base now, as well as to increase the profits its streaming services provide the general company coffers.
