Most of the free streamer’s new additions will come all at once on the first of the month, including the three-time Oscar nominee “A Soldier’s Story” directed by the recently departed Norman Jewison (“Moonstruck,” “In the Heat of the Night”), the franchise-launching “How to Train Your Dragon,” and more classics of the past four decades.

A Soldier’s Story” | Thursday, Feb. 1

Early-career Denzel Washington appears in a supporting role in this Oscar-nominated adaptation of Charles Fuller’s Pulitzer Prize-winning “A Soldier’s Play.” (Worth noting: another adaptation is now in the works for TV based on the recent Broadway adaptation of “A Soldier’s Play,” with David Alan Grier, who plays a supporting role in “A Soldier’s Story,” expected to reprise his Tony-winning performance for the screen.) But it’s Howard E. Rollings Jr. who leads the cast here as Captain Richard Davenport, a Black Army investigator who travels to a remote military base to look into the mysterious murder of a Black sergeant toward the tail end of World War II, arriving to discover an Army regiment and a community torn apart by race and segregation. The cast also features Adolph Caesar, Art Evans, David Harris, Dennis Lipscomb, Larry Riley, Robert Townsend, William Allen Young, John Hancock, Patti LaBelle, and more.

How to Train Your Dragon” | Thursday, Feb. 1

The first in what is now a fully established and well-loved franchise, 2010’s “How to Train Your Dragon” follows Hiccup, an undersized teen in a Viking village wishing to become a dragon slayer who injures a rare Night Fury dragon he instead helps and befriends the dragon. Jay Baruchel leads the voice cast opposite Gerard Butler, Craig Ferguson, America Ferrera, Jonah Hill, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, T.J. Miller, Kristen Wiig, and more. In addition to the two sequels that have since premiered, Universal Pictures is also working on a live-action reboot scheduled for June 2025.

The Edge of Seventeen” | Thursday, Feb. 1

The coming-of-age comedy genre gets a new classic with “The Edge of Seventeen,” starring Hailee Steinfeld as Nadine, a high school junior who is already at peak teenage awkwardness when her all-star older brother Darian (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend Krista (Haley Lu Richardson). But Nadine, feeling more alone than ever, is given a glimmer of hope when she starts an unexpected friendship with Erwin (Hayden Szeto). Woody Harrelson and Kyra Sedgwick co-star as Nadine and Darian’s parents.

The Wife” | Thursday, Feb. 1

Glenn Close picked up Oscar and BAFTA noms for her starring role in the adaptation of Meg Wolitzer’s 2003 novel as Joan opposite Jonathan Pryce’s Joe, complements (and foils) after nearly 40 years of marriage. But as Joe is about to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, Joan begins to reflect on and question her life choices told through their shared compromises, secrets, and betrayals.

Candyman” | Tuesday, Feb. 13

Nia DaCosta, Jordan Peele, and Win Rosenfeld’s sequel to the '90s classic flew somewhat under the radar despite acclaim thanks to three pandemic-related release delays. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stars in the present-day supernatural horror film as an artist who begins to explore Candyman’s history, not knowing it would lead him to a violent obsession. Teyonah Parris, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Colman Domingo co-star with Vanessa Williams, Virginia Madsen, and Tony Todd reprising their roles from the 1992 film.

Freevee
