Prime Video has more subscribers than Netflix, any other service in the US

The data from Parks Associates shows how successful Amazon’s strategy of distributing Prime Video alongside Prime has been.

The current prevailing wisdom in streaming analysis is that the marketplace will continue to shift until there are just a few, giant-sized streaming services left. Companies with a large customer count have the edge, particularly those with big subscriber bases in the United States. New data from Parks Associates continues to point to Netflix, Prime Video and Disney streamers as the biggest in the U.S., showing they could have a big leg up on the competition in the future.

Key Details:

  • Prime Video continues to be the largest streamer in the U.S., after supplanting Netflix in 2022.
  • Disney+ rose to third on the list for the first time since 2021, beating out Hulu this year.
  • Peacock cracked the top five of U.S. streamers in Parks’ latest report.

The data shows that, despite Netflix’s numerical dominance when it comes to subscribers, Prime Video is actually the largest streaming service in the United States. Parks Associates’ Streaming Video Tracker confirms that Prime Video is in the leading spot once again, after taking over the No. 1 ranking from Netflix in 2022.

In its last quarterly earnings report, Netflix indicated it had 84.8 million subscribers in the United States and Canada. Prime Video does not share any subscriber numbers publicly, but Parks nevertheless is able to project it into the top spot on the list.

Disney+ rose to third on the Parks list, supplanting its corporate sibling Hulu. Disney+ was last able to claim the third spot in 2021, but Disney likely isn’t sweating the back-and-forth battle between it and Hulu for that ranking. The two streamers are closer than ever now that Hulu titles are available to stream on the Disney+ app for subscribers to both services.

All streaming services on the 2024 top 10 list are returning from 2023. YouTube’s paid, ad-free service YouTube Premium continues to take the tenth spot, and if Parks’ tracker measured the free YouTube platform it would likely be much higher on the list.

NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock is a big riser on the list, cracking the top five for the first time despite not appearing in the rankings at all until 2022. Peacock revealed just days ago that as of the end of the third quarter, it had 36 million subscribers. Max, Paramount+, Apple TV+, ESPN+, and YouTube Premium round out the top 10.

The list is incredibly useful information to have, especially for executives who are trying to plot out their company’s streaming future. The streaming marketplace is likely to consolidate in the next few years, and firms like Amazon, Disney, and Netflix could be looking to make acquisitions of other streamers’ content in a much more comprehensive way. Having this data could give them an idea of which companies to go after.
