The new year is upon us, and with it, comes some potential decisions about which streaming services you want to keep moving forward. Whether you got a new streamer on a promotional deal that’s about to expire, or you tried a service you’ve never subscribed to before with some extra holiday money, you probably don’t need to keep every subscription you’ve got. We’ll break down which streamers are must-haves in January, and which ones you can probably let go for at least a few weeks!
Which streamers do you need to keep in January?
January 2025 must-have streamers
Apple TV+
Apple TV+ is first up on our list of streamers you should definitely keep this month. If you got an Apple device for the holidays, you’re probably in the midst of a three-month free trial to the streamer, but even if you’re not, there are some really great shows coming to the streamer that are worth sticking around for. While the streamer is not known for having a ton of titles to choose from, what it does have is a great track record for turning out high-quality shows and two of their best are returning this month.
The new season of “Severance” premieres on Apple TV+ on Friday, Jan. 17. While the Season 2 premiere hasn’t aired yet, the early reviews are fantastic. As of the publication of this article, review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes has collected 40 reviews from professional critics and the season sits at a perfect 100% Fresh Rating
Kristen Baldwin of Entertainment Weekly wrote in her review, “In season 2, ‘Severance’ forces both its characters and its viewers to confront our ugly tendency to assess another’s worth based primarily on how that person’s needs and desires align with our own.”

But “Severance” is not the only highly acclaimed show returning to Apple TV+ this month. “Mythic Quest” will premiere its fourth season on the platform on Wednesday, Jan. 29. While it hasn’t gotten the widespread pop culture acclaim that “Severance” has, “Mythic Quest” is just as well received, boasting a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score.
Created by Charlie Day, Megan Ganz, and Rob McElhenney (with the latter starring), the show follows the often dysfunctional team behind one of the largest video games in the world. The show is smart, funny, and delightfully sardonic. If you are keeping your Apple TV+ subscription, there is plenty of time to binge the first three 10-episode seasons before Season 4 kicks off.
Max
As the streaming extension of HBO, Warner Bros. Discovery’s flagship platform Max is one of the most consistent homes for buzzy, prestige TV series, and January is no exception. “The Pitt” could be one of the most compelling medical TV shows to hit TV screens since “ER,” which would be fitting. The new series — premiering on Thursday, Jan. 9 — stars “ER” favorite Noah Wiley and is produced by John Wells, who was the executive producer on “ER.”

In addition to the prestige drama debuting this week, Max will also welcome back the beloved, foul-mouthed adult animated series “Harley Quinn” for its fifth season beginning on Thursday, Jan. 16. But Max is for more than just TV shows. Last week, the new thriller “The Front Room” starring Brandy began streaming and on Friday, Jan. 17, “A Different Man,” which earned Sebastian Stan a Golden Globe over the weekend will be available to stream.
Max is also nice to have for sports fans as its Bleacher Report Sports Add-On will carry nationally broadcast NBA and NHL games from TBS and TNT at no extra cost. So while “The Last of Us” Season 2 won’t be available on the streamer until April, MAx is still providing some high-quality titles that will keep you streaming for the entire month.
January 2025 streamers you can cancel
Disney+
The only big-name releases coming to Disney+ this month are a new season of “Goosebumps” (Friday, Jan. 10) and the animated “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” (Wednesday, Jan. 29) There are no live-action Marvel or Star Wars shows premiering, and no big-name animated titles from Disney or Pixar, which means you can probably let Disney+ go for the time being.
If you are watching “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew,” the Season 1 finale airs on Tuesday, Jan. 14, so you could also cancel after you watch the final episode.
Get Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ for just $16.99 a month ($14 savings).
Streamer you can let go: Paramount+
With apologies to fellow Star Trek fans, when the only major release on Paramount+ is the upcoming “Section 31” streaming-exclusive film — which is coming to the platform on Friday, Jan. 24. — it’s probably not necessary to keep it around all month. It seems unlikely that football fans who are looking to stream the NFL playoffs will be content to only watch the games that happen to be on CBS, so unless you subscribe to Sling TV, which doesn’t offer CBS, it’s not likely that Paramount+ will be enough to satisfy your football cravings.
Streamer you can let go: Hulu
To be fair, Sterling K. Brown’s new series “Paradise” looks pretty intriguing. In the show, the Emmy winner plays a security guard for a former president, but other than the fact that it is set to premiere on Tuesday, Jan. 28, not much is known about it. the show does re-pair Brown with “This Is Us” creator Dan Fogelman, so that bodes well, but since most Fogelman shows have some sort of a twist, we are a little hesitant to recommend keeping a streamer for a show we know almost nothing about.
Besides that, the rest of month’s Hulu slate looks pretty bare. Of course, the platform will continue to have next-day, on-demand episodes from ABC, Freeform, Fox, and other channels, but it is a relatively slow time in the TV calendar, so we think it’s OK to leave it behind in January.
