To Watch ‘Echo’ on Disney+, You Might Need to Update Your Parental Settings; Here’s How to Do It

The latest MCU-set series is the first to come with a rating of TV-MA thanks to a violent and bloody premise.

At 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Jan. 9, Disney+ and Hulu — for the first time ever —released all five episodes of its latest Marvel television series “Echo.” However, some viewers might have run into issues watching it, if they hadn’t already updated their content management settings. By default, Disney+ profiles have a content ratings threshold set to TV-14, giving account holders the ability to raise and lower it for individual profiles. As “Echo” is rated TV-MA (for mature audiences) — harkening back to the Marvel Television series that aired on Netflix — MCU fans will need to adjust their settings if they haven’t done so already.

  • “Echo” is Marvel’s first series rated TV-MA to appear on Disney+.
  • In order to make sure a specific profile is allowed to watch the show, the account holder must update the individual content settings.
  • Simultaneous with the Disney+ drop, the show also premiered on Hulu, the first Marvel Studios series to do so.

Originally slated to be released on Wednesday, Jan. 10, Disney moved the “Echo” premiere up a few hours to happen on Tuesday evening. The show also became the first Marvel Studios series to stream on Hulu. While Disney’s
ral entertainment platform has been the home of other Marvel TV shows, those were all produced by the now-defunct Marvel Television, which produced “Runaways,” “Helstrom,” “M.O.D.O.K.,” and “Hit-Monkey” for Hulu, before being folded into the larger Marvel Studios apparatus. The series will, presumably, live on Disney+ in perpetuity, but “Echo” will only be available to Hulu customers for three months through Tuesday, April 9.

Disney+ Is Not Just for Families Anymore

This is not the first time that Disney+ has encouraged subscribers to update their content ratings settings. In November, Disney informed customers that as it prepared to launch the beta test for a one-app experience bringing Hulu content to Disney+ for the first time that in order to stream the more adult-theme programming coming into Disney+, they would have to up their settings. However, Disney also wanted to give parents fair-warning to make sure that their children’s profiles were set up properly.

Nearly two years ago, Disney+ launched new parental settings when it first incorporated Marvel Television series into its library. This is especially appropriate for “Echo” as it is seemingly the first Marvel Studios series to specifically reference the events of one of the Marvel Television series. While Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk/Kingpin previously appears in Disney+’s “Hawkeye” and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdoch/Daredevil was in “Spider-Man: Far From Home” and “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,” both played less versions of those characters originated in Netflix’s “Daredevil.”

However, the trailers and teasers for the series promise a return to more violent and bloody versions of those characters. For a service that launched on the premise of being a family-focused and friendly streaming option, this has obviously brought on both consternation from concerned parents and logistical issues for confused users. Fortunately, the platform does make it easy to remedy at least the logistical issues.

How Do You Update Your Parental Settings on Disney+?

As you can see in the image above, many Disney+ users have recently received notifications that certain content was not available specifically because of their content settings. However, it is fairly easy to update those settings for someone with management credentials on the account. Here’s how to do that:

1) From the profile screen, click “Edit Profiles” in the top right corner.

2) Once the pencil image appears in the bottom right of each profile, click on the one whose content ratings settings you want to change.

3) Scroll down to the “Parental Controls” section of the menu and select “Content Rating”:

4) Select the rating level that you want the profile to be set at and hit save.
