How to Set Up a Kids Profile on Max to Restrict Content

You may find that a parent account on Max isn’t suitable for kids in your home. For that reason, Max has their own Kids profiles which restrict the kind of content that are shown in the app. With two types of profiles available—Adult and Kids—you can now enjoy up to 5 personalized profiles, including one specially designed for your child’s viewing experience. Let’s dive into the details on how to add a Kids profile on Max, how to edit a profile on Max, understanding Max’s Content Ratings, and how to set up a Parent Code/Pin. Let’s dive in:

Why opt for a Kids profile?

  • Parental controls: Take control of what content what children in your home can watch by setting specific content ratings, such as G or PG.
  • Kids Home screen: Kids will have a customized Home screen, tailored to their preferences. They can create their own “My List” and “Continue Watching” list, making it easier to find their favorite shows and movies.
  • Kid-Proof Exit: Keep kids within their profile by enabling Kid-Proof Exit or by adding a Profile PIN to your Adult profiles.
  • Account management limitations: Kids profiles do not have access to account management features, ensuring your password and subscription information stay secure.

Adding a Kids profile is a breeze:

New subscribers to Max will have a Kids profile already set up for them. But if you have had a subscription prior to May 23, 2022, you may need to add one. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Select your profile, then click on “+ New Profile” (if you have more than 3 profiles, you might need to scroll right).
  2. Choose an avatar or skip this step.
  3. Enter the child’s name, nickname, or codename (between 1 and 14 characters).
  4. Activate Kids Mode.

By default, the Ratings are set to Pre-teens (TV-PG and PG), but you can customize this when you edit the Kids profile. For more information, head to Max's Content ratings section. Additionally, you have the option to enable Kid-Proof Exit, which requires a 4-digit Parent Code to exit the Kids profile. Remember, your account has a single Parent Code that you can set or change in the Settings.

Don’t forget to save your changes!

Editing a Kids profile

Because kids are devious, editing a Kids Profile has to be done through a browser once it is set up. Max has to different ways of doing this based on you accessing it via a phone/tablet or a computer:

For Phone or tablet users:

  1. Select your profile and click on “Edit Profiles.”
  2. Choose the desired Kids profile.
  3. Click on “Manage Settings,” and the app will open a browser window.
  4. Enter your email and password, then click on “Sign In” (if needed).
  5. Customize the profile’s name, avatar, ratings, and enable or disable Kid-Proof Exit.
  6. Click on “Done” to save your changes.

For Computer users:

  1. Select your profile and click on “Edit Profiles.”
  2. Choose the desired Kids profile.
  3. Customize the profile’s name, avatar, ratings, and enable or disable Kid-Proof Exit.
  4. Click on “Done” to save your changes.

Understanding content ratings and parental controls:

Max adheres to the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) or the TV Parental Guidelines for rating shows and movies. You’ll find the maturity rating displayed in two places:

  1. On the description screen of an episode or movie.
  2. In the upper-left corner when you start playing an episode or movie.

When editing a Kids profile, you can select one of the following rating groups to restrict the content your child can access and discover through searching:

  • Little Kids (TV-Y): Suitable for all kids.
  • Big Kids (TV-Y and TV-Y7-FV): Suitable for older kids.
  • Big Kids Plus (TV-G and G): Suitable for all ages.
  • Pre-teens (TV-PG and PG): Suitable for most older kids.
  • Teens (TV-14 and PG-13): Suitable for most teens.

Troubleshooting Content and Ratings

Experiencing issues with content ratings? If the content ratings you set for a Kids profile aren’t functioning as expected, here are a few troubleshooting steps:

  1. Check device restrictions: Verify if any restrictions are enabled on your device, such as Content Restrictions on iOS. If the device your child is using has more stringent parental controls than the ratings you set on Max, the platform will comply with the device’s parental controls.
  2. TV provider restrictions: Please note that Max does not follow parental controls set by your TV provider.

How to add a Parent Code / Parent PIN

You can add a 4-digit PIN to your Adult profile to keep children (or other members of your home) from using your profile. Once you add a Profile PIN, your PIN must be entered to access your profile. And if you aren’t sure if you’ve set a PIN or not, Adult profiles with a PIN have a Lock icon next to them.

To add or reset your Parent Code, follow these instructions based on the device you’re using:

For Phone or Tablet:

  1. Access your profile in Max.
  2. Choose “App Settings” and select “Manage Parent Code.” This action will open a browser window.
  3. Enter your email and password, then click on “Sign In” (if needed).
  4. Set a new 4-digit Parent Code and select “Save.”
  5. Close the browser window and return to Max.

Unable to modify the Parent Code on your mobile device? Try using your computer instead by visiting max.com. Choose your profile and navigate to “Settings > Manage Parent Code” to make the necessary changes.

For Computer:

  1. Visit max.com and select your profile. If you need assistance signing in, we’re here to help.
  2. Click on “Settings” and choose “Manage Parent Code.”
  3. Enter a new 4-digit Parent Code and select “Save.”
  4. Your Parent Code will be applicable to all Kids profiles with Kid-Proof Exit activated.
