SaferVPN Review

VPNs can feel overwhelming. Whether it is translating and understanding the various protocols and encryptions, or determining what is the best approach for maintaining security, there is a lot to deal with. That’s why so many services offer themselves as the simpler option to approach. For example, SaferVPN declares itself as “The Fastest and Safest VPN Worldwide.” But is that really true?

SaferVPN was founded in 2013 by Safer Social, Ltd, an Israeli based web startup. They began everything off as an attempt to create a market designed to promote cybersecurity after creating and patenting a tool for tracking and stopping car thieves. The company has, since, maintained a notable presence in the VPN market.

When a user logs onto SaferVPN’s website, the interface is gracious and inviting, offering a multitude of savings and discounts for users. For example, as of June 2020, a $5-a-month rate was immediately offered to us upon logging in, along with email prompts. The company does not offer any trials, but advertises their 30-day-moneyback guarantee on their front page.

Upon clicking the page, users are prompted to choose a subscription. On average, the service will range from 12.95 for a single month, 5.49 a month for a year, to 2.50 a month for an entire year. The more users subscribe to the service, the more of a discount they get for it. Getting an account is straightforward, only requiring an email address, payment options and an agreement. SaferVPN is special, in that they allow for cryptocurrency to be used to pay for your subscription, if a user prefers that option.

Of the VPNs we have reviewed, SaferVPN has one of the most diverse collection of apps and software available to users. It had standard systems, like Windows, Mac, Android, iOS and Router control. But it also offers apps for Chromebook (including a Chrome add-on) and Firefox specifically, allowing users to attach it specifically to their routers.

It’s hard to ignore that anything involving security can be quite overwhelming, particularly when a user is not used to the language of the internet and coding. Safe to say that users will receive AES 256-bit encryption with their service, which is considered military grade encoding. It also offers what it calls Perfect Forward Secrecy (PFS). PFS is a tool that generates a new encryption key every time that a session of connection It also comes with the advanced VPN protocols of PPTP, L2TP, IKEV2 and OpenVPN, all available to users. It also offers Automatic Wi-Fi Security, keeping users safe while using public Wi-Fi connections.

If users want, they can easily access the settings for protocols and swap between them. While the software is preset to automatic choice for protocols, swapping between the four options available is as easy as a click. They can also activate the Wi-Fi security, enable Trusted network management and use a killswitch if they need it.

Upon installing the software and pulling it open, users are prompted to choose a server. They can automatically connect to the best available location. However, when we did so, we were prompted to connect to Albania, which had an abysmal connection speed. When we swapped to servers in the United States and Australia, we had a much better connection, but the prompt was not obvious. The service also offers recommended servers depending on location and strength which were fairly reliable.

Like most VPNs, SaferVPN claims that they have fast speeds and reliable connections. In our experience, we found that to be reliable. On a 40 Mbps connection, we had minimal issues getting onto a server or maintaining a connection. On a U.S. West-based server, we were able to maintain a 63.4 Mbps download/20.1 Mbps upload consistently through a series of online tests.

While VPNs are fantastic for protecting any and all data coverage, access to streaming services is an integral feature as well. If users want to be able to get to Disney+ and Netflix, they should have zero issues with VPN, especially if they are outside of the country. Netflix has made attempts to block this, but SaferVPN had minimal issues breaching the barriers.

SaferVPN offers a plethora of countries, each with several servers set to them. It is unclear based on the interface which countries have more than one server and which ones do not. They claim to have 1,300 servers total in 50 countries, but there does not seem to be a way to swap from one server to another if desired.

SaferVPN has a solid base of users and products. Not only did we maintain strong connections with solid security options, but their interface is intuitive.
