Sports streamer DAZN wants to reach 1 billion global fans
The sports streaming service provided an update on Friday, announcing its triumphs in 2024.
Was 2024 a successful year for the sports streaming platform DAZN? The company would certainly have you think so, as it released a triumphal status update on Jan. 24 touting its accomplishments for the previous year. Revenue was up, viewership was robust, and the future looks bright after continued investments and new sports rights deals for the streamer.
Key Details:
- DAZN says it has over 300 million “regular viewers,” and aims for a reach of 1 billion.
- The streamer picked up the rights to the FIFA Club World Cup, EuroLeague Women’s basketball, and more in 2024.
- DAZN will receive a $1 billion investment from the Saudi Public Investment Fund.
DAZN did not provide a paid subscriber total in the update but said it has over 300 million “regular viewers” around the globe. This number almost certainly includes customers who watch free programming on the streamer, as any service with 300 million paid subscribers — like Netflix — would undoubtedly be more explicit in announcing that victory.
Nevertheless, DAZN is aiming higher, according to CEO Shay Segev.
“Our aim to reach one billion global users reflects the scale of our vision, and – as the only global direct-to-consumer sports platform – we are well-positioned to make this a reality,” he said.
The update also states that DAZN streamed more than 90,000 individual sporting events around the world in 2024. More marquee games are coming to the service this year, as it secured the rights to stream the new FIFA Club World Cup for free when it begins in June. DAZN also struck a deal in late 2024 to become the streaming partner of EuroLeague women's basketball.
From a revenue standpoint, the streamer said it expects to pull in $6 billion in revenue this year. It’s not clear if that figure includes an anticipated $1 billion infusion from the Saudi Public Investment Fund, a deal which was reported to be in the advanced stages but not quite sealed in mid-January. Dazn “achieved an increase in underlying profitability of over 50%” in 2024, though the update does not specify whether the streamer was actually profitable or not last year.
“Through bold investments, cutting-edge innovation, and strategic partnerships, we are reshaping the sports entertainment landscape and steering it to a digital future,” Segev said in the update. “Do not underestimate the scale of what we want to achieve at DAZN as we continue to reimagine the fan experience and lead the industry.”
