When can you stream The Rock’s new movie ‘Red One’ at home?
‘Red One’ is most likely to stream on Prime Video once it leaves theaters, but how long will it take?
The Christmas season is nearly here, but what would happen to the holiday if Santa Claus himself went missing? That’s the dilemma faced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in his new movie “Red One,” which makes its theatrical debut on Friday, Nov. 15. When will you be able to stream the movie at home with a subscription? We’ll give our thoughts on that question below!
Key Details:
- Reviews indicate “Red One” is exactly the kind of holiday romp you’d expect from The Rock.
- The movie is being distributed by MGM studios, so will either stream on Prime Video or the MGM+ App.
- Recent history suggests a theatrical window of around 90 days is a good bet for “Red One.”
Watch a Trailer for ‘Red One’:
“Red One” features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Callum Drift, head of security at the North Pole. He wants to retire after his next Christmas, but things go sideways fast when Santa (J.K. Simmons) is kidnapped. Callum must team up with a crack hacker (Chris Evans) and fellow North Pole employee Zoe Harlow (Lucy Liu) to help find the jolly old elf and get him back before it’s time for his annual sleigh ride!
The movie hasn’t exactly bowled over critics, sporting a 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. But this isn’t the type of movie you go to expecting awards bait, and with a cast like “Red One” sports, there’s nearly no chance you’ll end up watching this movie without being entertained.
When and where will ‘Red One’ stream on-demand?
The question of where “Red One” will stream once it’s finished in theaters is a bit of a tricky one. The movie is being distributed by MGM in the United States, which is owned by Amazon. That means it will either stream on the MGM+ App or Prime Video once it’s time; I’m leaning towards Prime Video because of the intended broad appeal of the film, but that’s just an educated guess.
We do have data points to surmise how long it will take for the movie to reach on-demand streaming. MGM also distributed Channing Tatum’s new movie “Blink Twice,” which is due to arrive on MGM+ on Nov. 21, 90 days after its initial release. Other recent MGM movies have had similar release windows; “Creed III” went to Prime Video after 98 days in 2023, and “Challengers” streamed 94 days after coming out in theaters.
I see no reason to think “Red One” will deviate from that pattern. I think the movie will debut on Prime Video on Friday, Feb. 14, 91 days from its initial release. It’ll make the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for lovers of Christmas who aren’t ready to give up that holiday season feeling.
