How to Watch ‘The Holdovers’ on Apple TV, Fire TV, Roku & Mobile

The old saying goes that there’s no place like home for the holidays, but sometimes, spending time with loved ones just isn’t in the cards. That’s the case for three very different people at a New England prep school in 1970 in “The Holdovers,” premiering on Peacock on Friday, Dec. 29. Paul Giamatti plays a curmudgeonly history teacher forced to remain on campus over the Christmas vacation to keep an eye on the students who can’t return home for the holidays. Over the break, he forms a surprising family with a mischievous student and the school’s head cook, both of whom are looking for something they can’t get at home. You can watch with a subscription to Peacock.

About 'The Holdovers'

Director Alexander Payne’s latest film, “The Holdovers” follows Giamatti’s Paul Hunham as he is tasked with watching over the five “holdovers” at the Barton Academy boarding school who have nowhere to go during the holidays. A grumpy and irritable classics teacher, Hunham eventually forms an unlikely bond with one of the holdovers, Angus Tully (played by Dominic Sessa).

Agnus is intelligent, but his turbulent personal life often leads him to lash out. However, over the break, Hunham and Agnus form a bond with the school’s head cook Mary Lamb (Da’Vine Joy Randolph). Even though she has family that she could be spending time with for Christmas, the fact that she has recently lost her son in the Vietnam War weighs heavy on her during the holiday celebrations. The three disparate holdovers form a unique family in order to provide the support that each needs, but can’t seem to acknowledge.

Also appearing in the film are Carrie Preston, Brady Hepner, Ian Dolley, Jim Kaplan, Michael Provost, Naheem Garcia, Gillian Vigman, Tate Donovan, and more. The movie has been nominated for three Golden Globes and four Independent Spirit Awards and is expected to be a contender at the Oscars in March.
