The No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes are coming off of a major top-10 victory over Penn State last weekend, and will look to avoid a letdown as they take on a familiar face in Camp Randall Stadium as for Buckeye player and coach Luke Fickell’s Wisconsin Badgers will welcome OSU to Madison for a primetime showdown. Wisconsin currently holds a half-game lead in the Big Ten West, so they need to pull off the upset to stay ahead of the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Buckeyes are tied with archrival Michigan in the East, with a season-finale showdown looking likely for the conference crown and a College Football Playoff berth.

The Buckeyes are coming into Saturday’s primetime matchup as a heavy favorite. The Buckeyes are averaging 33.7 points per game, and giving up just 10, while the Badgers are scoring just under 27 and allowing 18.3. The Vegas oddsmakers seem to have split the difference with their lines, as they think Wisconsin will do slightly better on both sides of the ball than OSU’s average opponents, but not nearly well enough to make it a competitive game.
Team Stats
Statistic | Maryland | Northwestern |
---|---|---|
Points Scored per Game | 33.4 | 20.1 |
Points Allowed per Game | 18.6 | 25.9 |
Total Yards Gained | 1,970 | 1,396 |
Total Yards Allowed | 2,366 | 2,420 |
The Buckeyes are entering the final five games of the 2023 regular season a much different team than they were a year ago. For most of head coach Ryan Day’s tenure in Columbus, OSU has been an offense-led team that has struggled defensively. That is not the case this year. While the offense is still solid — the No. 1 offense in the Big Ten at 431.9 yards per game — it is not nearly as productive as it was with quarterbacks Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields, or C.J. Stroud at the helm.
Nonetheless, in the second year under defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, the Silver Bullets have returned and currently hold the No. 3 scoring defense and No. 5 total defense in FBS. So while starting QB might still be getting used to playing the game at a Power 5 level, the defense seems to be more than capable of making up any difference.
For the Badgers, in Fickell’s first year in charge, there is a bit of a learning curve going on in Madison. The traditional power-running offense for UW is being merged into a version of the Air Raid under offensive coordinator Phil Longo. Despite 17 transfers joining the roster for this season, there is still a bit of having to fit a square peg into a round hole for the offense. Nonetheless, the Badgers are currently fifth in the B1G in total offense, averaging 396.9 yards per game.
While Coach Fickell’s expertise is on the defensive side of the ball, there is a bit of a learning curve happening there, as the Badgers currently rank seventh in the conference in terms of yards allowed per game, giving up 334.1 per contest.
Maryland and Northwestern Quarterback Matchup:
QB | Team | CMP | ATT | CMP% | YDS | AVG | TD | INT | RTG |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Kyle McCord | Ohio State | 131 | 205 | 63.9 | 1,937 | 9.4 | 12 | 1 | 161.6 |
Braedyn Locke | Northwestern | 37 | 72 | 51.4 | 370 | 5.1 | 2 | 1 | 100.9 |
Following in the footsteps of Haskins, Fields, and Stroud is a daunting proposition, and while third-year quarterback Kyle McCord has not yet reached the heights of his predecessors, he has been able to produce when his team needed him the most. In games against top-10 opponents Notre Dame and Penn State, the first-year starter has corrected first-half inaccuracies to lead his team to must-have wins. And while some Buckeye fans and media have been critical about his shortcomings, McCord is still leading the conference with 276.7 passing yards per game and is second in yards per attempt and quarterback rating.
There are clearly still areas of his game that need to be improved to maximize the incredible talent that he has surrounding him — including the best wide-receiving duo in the country Marvin Harrison Jr. and Emeka Egbuka and the best pass-catching tight end in college football (at least while Georgia’s Brock Bowers is injured) Cade Stover.
While McCord is in his first season as a starter, Braedyn Locke is in just his second game as he is taking over for the injured Tanner Mordecai. Initially, Locke went to Mississippi State to play for the late Mike Leach — the leading authority on the Air Raid in college football — but following the coach’s passing, the QB entered the transfer portal and eventually decided to join Longo, who developed his version of the Air Raid after meeting Leach in the late 1990s.
In his first career start, Locke went 21 of 41 for 240 yards and 2 touchdowns in a 25-21 win over [Illinois]. Before replacing Mordecai in the previous week’s game against the Hawkeyes, Locke had only completed a single pass in his collegiate career.
