Is ‘Abigail’ Streaming Now? When Will Universal’s Latest Horror Movie Reach Peacock?

The new creature feature from Universal will stream on Peacock, but how long will it take to arrive?

We’re only halfway to Halloween 2024, but Universal Studios isn’t reserving all of its horror films for Spooky Season. Its latest scary movie is titled simply “Abigail,” but fans will be jumping out of their seats plenty often when the movie debuts in theaters on Friday, April 19, despite the short moniker.

  • “Abigail” has compiled an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics so far.
  • As a Universal film, “Abigail” will stream on Peacock when it leaves theaters.
  • Universal horror releases like “The Black Phone” and “M3GAN” suggest it won’t take long for “Abigail” to stream on Peacock, but more recent releases tell a different tale.

“Abigail” follows a group of would-be criminals who kidnap the 12-year-old ballerina daughter of a powerful underworld figure. All they have to do to collect a $50 million ransom is watch the girl overnight. In an isolated mansion, the captors start to dwindle one by one, and they discover to their mounting horror that whatever they’re locked in with is no normal little girl.

The movie has compiled an 81% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes thus far. Reviewers praise the method in which the film uses classic horror tropes in a new way, managing to be both fresh and familiar at the same time.

When Will ‘Abigail’ Be Available to Stream on Peacock?

Since Universal is distributing “Abigail” in the United States, there’s no question of which streaming service will get the movie once it’s finished showing in theaters, and once its exclusive period on premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms like Apple, Prime Video and Redbox ends. Peacock will be the streaming home of “Abigail” first unless another platform like Shudder offers Universal a big-time licensing fee for the movie.

It’s fairly hard to say when that will be, however. Universal employed a 49-day release window for horror movies like “The Black Phone” and “M3GAN” in past years, but its 2024 release “Night Swim” nearly doubled that window. “Night Swim” spent 91 days making the rounds in theaters and on PVOD services before arriving on Peacock.

Until we see evidence to the contrary, we at The Streamable believe Universal will stick with the longer release window in order to maximize profits for “Abigail.” Our prediction is that the movie will also use a 91-day theatrical/PVOD period, coming to Peacock on Friday, July 19, and allowing audiences to take a break from summer fun by scaring themselves silly.
