New ‘Quick Access’ Row With Multiple Options Coming to Android TV Devices

This new row will slide in directly under the viewer’s Favorite Apps, and is intended to help audiences find something new to watch.

Google is continuing to update its Android TV-powered devices with new features intended to ease the path to content discovery. As announced in a new blog post, Google is bringing a new row of options to the user interface of Android TV, allowing viewers to more quickly find something new and exciting to stream.

  • Android TV’s Quick Access row allows viewers to play what’s next from their favorite apps, watch live TV and more.
  • The Quick Access row is immediately apparent on the home screen, located under the Favorite Apps row.
  • The update will make its way to NVIDIA Shield streaming devices and other Android TV players starting this week.

The Quick Access row is clearly intended to help customers cut down on browsing and find something to start watching faster. With millions of titles now available to stream worldwide, there’s an obvious need for this type of feature, especially considering the average viewer takes more than 10 minutes trying to find something new to watch.

How will the new Quick Access option on Android TV achieve the goal of quicker content discovery? It has several options designed to get the user watching immediately, starting with its “Play Next” option. This will display the next episode from the most recently-watched title across various supported streaming apps.

If that doesn’t strike your fancy, you can scroll over to the “Free Live TV” selection. Android TV offers hundreds of free, ad-supported streaming channels, and this selection will take the user to one of those channels so they can get to watching faster. Other options in the Quick Access row include “Top Selling Movies,” “Popular Movies and Shows” and “Trending on Google” tiles.

What Other Updates Has Android TV Made Recently?

Speaking of those hundreds of free streaming channels, Android TV wants to make it as easy as possible for its customers to find them. The channels were originally placed in a “Live” tab at the top of the screen, but they shifted to a tile on the “Favorite Apps” row in December to make the channels simpler to access.

Android mobile device users also saw a big update to their Fubo interfaces recently. In late January, Fubo updated its Android mobile app to allow customers to use the app with picture-in-picture mode, among other important feature improvements.

The sheer amount of TV episodes and movies available to stream makes the issue of content discovery more important than ever before. Google recognizes that problem, which is why its Android TV devices are now equipped with a new Quick Access row.
