Yankees, Knicks, More New York Teams Join Forces for Gotham Sports Streaming Platform

The Gotham Sports app will feature live games and other content now available on YES Network and MSG Network

Games from the Yankees and many other New York sports teams will be available on the new Gotham Sports App.

It’s about to get a lot less complicated to stream top New York sports teams. On Wednesday, the Gotham Advanced Media and Entertainment (GAME) joint venture formed by YES Network and MSG Network announced the launch of a brand-new streaming app which will launch for customers sometime between the end of the New York Yankees’ regular season in September and the start of the NBA and NHL regular seasons in October. The app has been dubbed the “Gotham Sports App,” and will offer games from the New York Yankees, New York Knicks, and many other major league sports teams from the Big Apple.

Key Details:

  • The Gotham Sports App will allow customers to subscribe to YES Network App and MSG+ separately, or combine the offerings of both.
  • Fans with cable subscriptions will be able to sign in and use the app at no cost.
  • The new app is still expected to offer single-game passes for $10 each through MSG+.

The Gotham Sports App will feature live games and a host of other live and on-demand content. In addition to the Knicks and Yankees, the app will provide viewers the opportunity to stream Brooklyn Nets, Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils, and New York Islanders games with or without a cable subscription.

Fans who get the YES Network and MSG Network channels as part of their cable subscriptions will be able to log into the service at no extra cost using their TV Everywhere credentials. Those without cable can use the app to access the YES Network App for $24.99 per month, the MSG+ app for $29.99 per month, or purchase a new “Gotham Package” with offerings from both for $41.99 per month or $359.99 annually. MSG+ users will still be able to grab single-game passes for $10 each.

“The Gotham Sports App allows fans of our teams one easy access point for New York area sporting events from MSG Networks and the YES Network,” MSG Networks president and CEO Andrea Greenberg said in a statement.

The app will be available on Android and iOS devices, as well as Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, and Roku-connected TV platforms and on the Web initially. The Gotham Sports App is a product of the GAME joint venture formed by YES Network and MSG in January.

Will New Gotham Sports App Face Same Problems as Venu Sports?

The Gotham Sports App will feature a ton of content, but fans don't have to worry about legal challenges from cable distributors.

If the Gotham Sports App sounds somewhat familiar in conception, that’s because it bears a resemblance to the Venu Sports joint venture streaming service built by Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery. That service would have combined the sports offering of each company onto a single streaming app priced at $42.99 per month. The app was set to go on sale earlier this month but was blocked from doing so by a preliminary injunction granted as part of an antitrust lawsuit brought against it by Fubo.

Fans in New York likely don’t have to worry about such interference, however. The Gotham Sports App will not be available nationally, only in the media markets of YES Network and MSG Network, so cable channel distributors like Fubo don’t have to worry about it eating into their customer bases on the scale that a product like Venu could. As mentioned above, viewers who get one or both of the channels with their cable plans will have reason to keep those subscriptions, since they’ll be allowed to sign into the Gotham Sports App using their pay-TV login credentials.

The Gotham Sports App is precisely what customers have been clamoring for: a singe platform for streaming many of the biggest sports teams in the region. One recent survey found that 69% of viewers say it’s a hassle to try to watch sports on multiple apps, and a platform like the Gotham Sports App should help to solve those woes.

Fans will want to keep an eye out for the Gotham Sports App sometime in late September or early October.
