‘Yellowstone’ Finally Returns to Production on Final Season 5 Episodes With No Word on Costner
The Western drama is still scheduled to return with its last episodes in November of this year.
There’s been so much off-camera drama surrounding “Yellowstone” that fans of the show can be forgiven for thinking that some of its characters have leaped off the screen and into real life. The rugged Western series following the triumphs, failures, and betrayals of the Dutton family hasn’t aired a new episode since January 1, 2023, and its co-creator Taylor Sheridan has decided to nix the planned final two seasons of the show and end it after its current fifth installment. Now, Paramount has announced that production on the long-awaited second half of Season 5 has finally begun, which means that fans can officially start getting excited about the return of new episodes to Paramount Network this November.
Key Details:
- Much of the blame for ‘Yellowstone’ production delays has been laid at the feet of the show’s star Kevin Costner.
- Two new Dutton family spin-off series set in various times are currently in the planning stages.
- Peacock allows viewers to stream every episode of “Yellowstone” on-demand.
In its announcement that “Yellowstone” has resumed production, Paramount confirmed that it still planned to start releasing the final inventory of Season 5 episodes this fall. In January 2023, when the Season 5, Part 1 finale of the show aired, it appeared that the biggest threat to the release of new episodes would be a looming Hollywood writer’s strike.
But things quickly fell apart for “Yellowstone” after that. In February, it was reported that Season 5 would officially be the show's last, and that a new series set in the same universe and starring Matthew McConaughey would be spun up to replace “Yellowstone.” News that Costner was leaving the show soon followed, and there’s still no clarity on whether he’ll return for the final part of Season 5 or not. The Oscar winner is currently filming the third chapter of his passion project “Horizon: An American Saga,” even though “Chapter 1” isn’t slated to hit theaters until Wednesday, June 26.
Sheridan’s camp blamed Costner’s unreasonable shooting schedule and demands for last year’s production delays, while Costner’s side revealed that Sheridan did not deliver scripts in a timely manner. Now that “Yellowstone” is officially ending, Paramount will move forward with two new Dutton family spinoffs set in different time periods: “1944” and “2024.”
In the meantime, fans have been forced to seek out and re-watch the show on-demand, or focus on the anthology series based on the Dutton family, “1883” and “1923.” Now, fans can at the very least look forward to some closure regarding the story of John Dutton and his ambitious, frequently scheming children.
Where Can You Stream ‘Yellowstone’ On-Demand?
Peacock is the best streaming service for watching “Yellowstone” on-demand, as it holds all episodes of the show that have been released so far, including the first half of Season 5. Peacock is due for a price increase before the second half of Season 5 hits the streamer in 2025, but for now, viewers will only have to pay $5.99 per month to get a subscription to Peacock’s ad-supported Premium plan, or $11.99 to stream ad-free.

The streamer currently offers Seasons 1 and 5 only, but like Philo, it carries Paramount Network, so any episodes of the series that air on that channel will also be available to Fubo subscribers. Fubo offers plans starting at $94.99 per month (including regional sports network fees), but all new customers get a free trial of the service first.
Get Your First Month of Fubo for Only $74.99 (normally $95) after your Free Trial.
Paramount+ doesn’t carry “Yellowstone,” as Paramount licensed the show’s streaming rights to Peacock back when it did not have an on-demand streamer of its own. Paramount executives have vowed never to repeat that mistake, but it has ensured Paramount+ won’t be getting on-demand “Yellowstone” episodes any time soon. However, viewers can watch other shows from the pen of Taylor Sheridan on Paramount+, including Dutton-verse titles like “1883” and “1923,” other Western-themed series like “Lawmen: Bass Reeves,” and more modern selections such as “Mayor of Kingstown.”
