MLB Launching Rockies.TV In-Market Streaming Service for Colorado Rockies Fans
MLB Launching Rockies.TV In-Market Streaming Service for Colorado Rockies Fans
Fans in the Colorado market will have a way to stream their local team in-market for the first time.
As MLB commissioner Rob Manfred seeks ways to offer his league’s games outside of the traditional cable bundle, the Colorado Rockies are stepping up to the plate. For the first time in the team’s history, the Rockies will be able to stream outside of cable this season, as the team is launching a new in-market streaming platform called Rockies.TV that will be available to all Colorado-area fans.
- Viewers can bundle their Rockies.TV subscription with MLB.TV to watch all MLB games not on national channels this year.
- Fans can subscribe to either monthly or annual plans of Rockies.TV starting at $19.99 per month.
- MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has designs on launching an in-market streaming service with as many MLB teams as possible.
Last season, the Rockies were found on AT&T SportsNet Rocky Mountain. That regional sports network (RSN) was formerly owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, but WBD exited the RSN business at the end of 2023. MLB took over the broadcast of Rockies games at that time and will be responsible for producing all Colorado baseball games in 2024.
That explains why the new Rockies.TV streamer comes from the league, rather than the team itself. Much like the 2023 season that saw Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres stream on an extension of MLB.TV for in-market fans, Rockies.TV will feature MLB.TV versions of Rockies games. They will simply be available to in-market fans instead of exclusively out-of-market audiences.
How Much Will Rockies.TV Cost?
Rockies.TV will offer monthly and annual plans. Fans can sign up to just Rockies.TV for $19.99 per month or $99.99 for the season. This will give viewers in the Colorado area access to all Rockies games not being shown on a national TV channel like ESPN or Fox.
Fans can also bundle Rockies.TV with MLB.TV, giving them access to locally-broadcast games from all other teams in the league. That will cost $39.99 per month, or $199.99 for the year. MLB.TV recently announced several new updates for the 2024 season, including improvements to its multiview feature.
Are More MLB Teams Coming to Streaming in 2024?
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has dreams of launching an in-market streaming service with multiple teams available by 2025. Since the league owns the digital rights for the Rockies, it could put that team’s games on the platform, just as it created the Rockies.TV service for in-market fans in 2024.
The Diamondbacks and Padres both saw their digital rights surrendered during the 2023 season by their former owner Diamond Sports Group. MLB will offer in-market streaming for those clubs as well, but there are only five other MLB clubs that will be available to stream without a cable subscription this year: Detroit Tigers, Kansas City Royals, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, and Tampa Bay Rays. Fans in those respective markets will find the games of those teams on Bally Sports+.
For 2024, it appears those eight teams are the only ones that fans can stream away from cable. The league is trying to figure out ways to increase the distribution of its teams via streaming, but until it can get its hands on the digital rights for more teams, it will continue to struggle in achieving Manfred’s goal of ending baseball blackouts once and for all.
